The major titles all changed hands from last season, but in the goal scoring stakes everything stayed the same.

Ellington Weldon and Marlon Lindsay both defended their goal scoring titles in the First and Second Divisions while Des Minors was once again the top marksman in the Commercial `A' Division with 26 goals.

Dandy Town, who were denied a fourth trophy last weekend when Vasco shocked them in the FA Cup final, have also been beaten out in the individual scoring where Weldon of Devonshire Colts has beaten Town's top marksman Carlos Smith.

Weldon, the top scorer last season with 15 league and cup goals, finished on top again with an improved 18 goals in all competitions while Smith tallied 17 league and cup goals.

When the new-look National Football Awards Committee ceremony is held tomorrow night, the leading goalscoring titles will be determined by league goals only, which sees Weldon again beating out Smith 15 to 11 while in the Second Division, Lindsay just pips Terrence Christopher with 14 league goals.

Christopher of Somerset Eagles had 13.

To be honoured after missing out last year is pleasing to Weldon, even though he fell two goals short of the 20-goal target he set himself at the beginning of the season.

"I definitely had the chances (to reach the target) especially in the last game against Somerset,'' said Weldon yesterday.

While Weldon is excited about having his name alongside the Island's top goal scorers of the past, he is sympathetic with a player like Kyle Lightbourne who scored 33 goals three seasons ago and was not recognised as the awards ceased that year. The goals Lightbourne scored in one season, Weldon needed two seasons to achieve.

Lightbourne would also have been a strong candidate for the MVP award that year and this season Weldon finds himself on a short list of four for the MVP title. The others are team-mate, and first cousin, Leonard Hypolite, Smith of Town and Troy Hall of St. George's.

"Any of the four will be a worthy winner of it,'' Weldon feels.

He is planning to take fiance Carrie Smith to the ceremony at Sonesta Beach Hotel tomorrow night and is urging other players to support the function, which is being staged by a new group.

"Players should attend whether they're nominated or not,'' Weldon feels.

"I definitely got the support from my wife-to-be who I think was more pleased than me when I was nominated. I want to thank her for her patience, tolerance and support.'' Weldon's target included 10 goals in each half of the season. He managed 11 in the second after netting seven times before Christmas.

Smith, despite playing in five more games, still had to settle for second.

"He went four games without scoring,'' said Weldon, who had obviously paid a lot of attention to the challenge from Smith. "He was two ahead of me before we played them in the FA Cup when I scored and he didn't.

"Then I got two against St. George's to go ahead of him by one. It's nice to win it two years in a row and have my name alongside `Gumbo' (Ralph Bean) and the rest of them.'' While Colts again missed out on the team titles, they were at least featured prominently in the individual awards with team-mates Quincy Aberdeen and Jahmah Samuels among the Young Player of the Year nominees.

Again Lindsay's goals failed to bring promotion to Wolves who were beaten for the second spot by BAA. In the 1993-94 season Lindsay scored 18 goals in all competitions, which was the same total as the previous season, while Christopher had 16 league and cup goals.

ELLINGTON WELDON -- Scored 18 goals in all competitions during the recently-concluded season.
