Vasco win at last as BAA suffer third loss
An inspired spell by Voorhees Astwood shortly before half-time set Vasco on the way to their first league victory of the season and left BAA still without a point from their opening three matches.
Vasco, who had been forced back on their heels for much of the first period, came into their own after half an hour with a sustained spell of pressure which promised much but delivered little.
Then, with just five minutes to go until the interval, Astwood set up the opener when he crossed from the left into the path of the oncoming Derek Thomas, who drove the ball low past the 'keeper for Vasco's first league goal of the season.
And it was Astwood who put his side two goals ahead just a minute later when he gave the diving Phil Bolton no chance with a close-range shot laid on by Irving Burgess.
The flurry ended on the stroke of half-time with Bolton forced to parry another Astwood effort for a corner.
BAA coach Johnny Adams was left to rue his team's missed chances having seen plenty of opportunities go begging in the early going. "We could have had four,'' he said as he headed for the dressing room at half-time.
And certainly there was plenty of early action for Vasco 'keeper Keenan Tucker, who was kept busy by BAA front men Andre Thompson, Clevie Critchlow and Robert Pacheco.
Tucker, who suffered a heavy blow to the thigh in one goal-mouth scramble, was replaced at half-time by Timmy Figuerido.
But aside from the change in goal, the second half began much as the first had ended with Mark Ray masterminding a number of promising Vasco moves from midfield.
But it was BAA who produced the first real chance of the half with Figuerido forced to save at the feet on the advancing Thompson.
BAA brought on Mick O'Donnell for Robbie Clementino in a bid to upset Vasco's rhythm, but they could not find a way through.
Missing the previous week's scorer Mechach Wade and first-choice 'keeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, both overseas with the Bermuda Under-23s, it was to be another cheerless afternoon for the home side at BAA field.
Vasco made a second substitution with 15 minutes to go when Earl Richardson replaced Derek Stapley who had taken a hard knock on the ankle.
Both teams battled to control the ball as the wind gusted round BAA field and dashed hopes of an attractive game.
Just a few faithful fans braved the elements to witness the bottom-of-the-table clash, which was put out of BAA's reach 10 minutes from the end when Burgess scored Vasco's third, set up by Kentoine Jennings, to make sure of the two points.
It was no more than Burgess deserved after coming close on two previous occasions.
Vasco coach Jack Castle was far from content with his team's display, but admitted that the weather conditions had not been conducive to good football.
"I'll take the two points, though,'' he said. "It's a start, and it gives us something to build on.'' BAA: P.Bolton; M.Thorne, T.Walker, N.Correia, D.Davies, D.Ashworth, R.Clementino (M.O'Donnell, 72 mins), S.Dill, A.Thompson, C.Critchlow, R.Pacheco.
