Young refs learn the ropes
trainees were a group of Saltus Grammar students, who recently passed the exam.
The band of 10 youths included prominent youth players such as Terence Corday, Cory Bean and John Best. Corday was a member of the 1992 East All-Star team, whereas Bean and Best are fixtures at both school and club level, Best was one of Somerset Bantams leading goalscorers this past season while Bean played for North Village.
BFA president and former referee, Charlie Marshall conducted the course, lending his vast experience and refereeing knowledge.
Many of the boys were able to test their skills officiating in Minor and Mini-Minor Division matches on Saturdays, sometimes working two or even three games on any given day.
When asked why he took up the task of performing this often thankless task Corday said he figured it would give him an increased knowledge of the game.
"It's nice to know the rules and laws as well as play it,'' said Corday, a post graduate student at the Pembroke school. "My first love is playing but I love working with the younger players and helping them with their development and learning of the game.'' Off to the University of Tampa in September, Corday felt that although the standard in Bermuda at present was not top grade there were some class officials. He also did not rule out the possibility of some day performing at the senior level himself.
"Maybe when I get older and I'm finished playing I would want to get back into it,'' said Corday. "But first I would like to play for my school, become an All-American, play First Division and hopefully represent my country.'' Another participant Daniel Morgan likewise enjoyed the course.
"Basically I did it just for fun to help the BFA out on Saturdays,'' said Morgan who confessed that his first love remains basketball. "But it did allow me to see the game in a new light.''
