Schools Track and Field Championships yesterday with a superb effort in the 3,000 metres final at National Stadium.

Smith knocked over a minute off Kimberley Roberts' mark, winning in 11 minutes, 53.59 seconds to highlight the first of two days in the annual championships.

Smith dominated the final but Roberts herself and two others better the former record of 13:05.34. Roberts was clocked in 12:41.42, a distant second, with M.Ferguson third in 12:44.81 and T.Williams of Warwick Academy in 12:48.63.

It was the only record to fall yesterday though more could be broken today when the CARIFTA Games athletes see action in the finals, having been afforded the luxury of not having to compete in the heats yesterday because of their arrival from the Bahamas only the day before.

Triple medal winner from the Games, Stephen Woodley, was in action yesterday, beating CARIFTA team-mate Donte Hunt to win the over 15 boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, one inch. Berkeley's Sharif Taylor, who also represented Bermuda in the Bahamas and won a silver in the 800 metres, won the 3,000 metres yesterday in 10:18.63.

Rohaan Simons of Warwick Secondary, who also won a high jump silver medal at CARIFTA, triumphed in the under 15 3,000 metres with a time of 10:39.28.

Berkeley, the overall winners last year, are leading in all divisions in the boys and in the junior and senior divisions in the girls. Bermuda High School are leaders in the intermediate girls going into today's finals, which start at 9 a.m.
