BCBC youngsters win all-star match

strokeplay, occasionally brilliant fielding and a bowling propensity for pitching short or wide. All of which made for a high scoring an entertaining game won by the BCBC XI at Wellington Oval on Saturday. Scores: Shell XI 169 for six, BCBC XI 170 for four.

The teams were well-matched, the difference perhaps being in the number of bowlers tried, with BCBC using seven while Shell gave 10 players a couple of overs each.

Shell captain Scott Tucker of St. David's scored 51 before retiring having hit six fours and two sixes. Also ending his innings short was Damon Thompson of Somerset who made 50 with six fours and three sixes. Southampton's Wolde Place hit six fours in his knock of 33 while Rudell Pitcher of St. David's took two for 14 from five overs for the BCBC.

The task of scoring at a run rate of just under six an over did not seem to daunt the BCBC batsmen who started in an opening stand of 53 before losing Chris Foggo (St. David's) for seven in the 10th over.

Dean Stephens (Southampton), the more aggressive opener, cracked 58 before retiring with seven fours and two sixes. Captain Jahmiko Marshall of Nationals then made 16 quick runs and was followed by Rudell Pitcher (St. David's) whose undefeated 45 saw the BCBC comfortable winners in the 27th over.

The Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association recorded a 59-run win over Social Club at St. John's field in the Willie Davis Memorial match on Sunday. Scores: BCUA 180, Social Club 121.

Mike Levon was the top gun for the umpires as he scored 37 and then removed Social's first three bats on the way to three for 20 from eight overs.

Jeff Pitcher top-scored for BCUA with 44, which included three fours and two sixes, while Alex Virgil made 38 and Wally Manders 28.

Arnold Adams, Webster Mills, Lee Raynor and Desmond Smith each took two wickets for Social.

Lester Harnett took three for eight from three overs to assist opener Levon.

Mills was high man with 34, Thomas Brangman made 20 and Lee Raynor 16 as the only men in double figures.

The Royal Gazette successfully retained the Jensen-Wharton Trophy with an 87-run win over the Bermuda Press at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday. Scores: Royal Gazette 228, Bermuda Press 141.

Dexter Smith was high man for the Gazette with 106 while Ivan Clifford made 38 and Cory Berkeley 29. Warren Iris took four for 35 for the Press and Paget Wharton three for 20.

Wharton was the best of the Press batsmen with 31, supported by Rudy Seaman's 20.
