Bermuda wide of the mark

Kenya when they fell by one wicket in a nerve-wracking finish against the United Arab Emirates yesterday.

The loss snapped a six game winning streak for Bermuda and forced them into the first semifinal tomorrow against the host nation at Aga Khan Sports Club.

The match was one for the record books as the aggregate total of both teams -- 659 -- is the highest ever in ICC Trophy tournament history while the 330 posted by UAE was the most by a team batting second.

After posting a mammoth target of 329, in which opening batsmen Dexter Smith struck a sparkling century, Bermuda were disenheartened by the response of UAE which scored the winning run with two balls to spare in their allotted 49 overs.

Bermudian fast bowler Terry Burgess began the final over with UAE needing two runs to win, and succeeded in keeping Arshad Laiq and tail-ender Suhail Butt in check until a wide-ball call by the umpire settled the most pulsating match of the tournament. Full story -- Page 19.
