Boulevard mistakes prove costly
Two goals from errors in each half enabled Vasco to establish firm control of this replay last night at Somerset, though the holders came battling back late in the contest before relinquishing their title.
They went into last night's contest determined to improve on last week's 2-2 and had Boulevard goalkeeper Lynn Tucker to thank for their opening goal in the 29th minute after he failed to handle a high cross.
And when Neil Robinson was made to pay for a second mistake early in the second half, Vasco knew they were on their way to the FA final for the first time since 1986.
They had an encouraging start as the Boulevard defence took time to settle. At the other end Clinton Caisey put a shot wide from close range.
Boulevard were missing injured winger Dwight Warren, who was resting a pull near the groin area, while Vasco were forced to start without Karl Roberts who was delayed because of Regiment duty.
After both teams went close during a first half that grew in excitement, Vasco finally broke the deadlock.
A freekick on the right side at the halfway line by fullback Colin Lloyd should have been handled by the unchallenged Tucker as he leapt to collect the ball, but it slipped out of his hands and a grateful Durham quickly stabbed home the loose ball.
Tucker almost paid again two minutes later when he dropped another cross from a Voorhees Astwood freekick, and then again in the 41st minute after a bad clearance in the 41st minute as his ball out of the penalty area went only as far as Astwood. The quickly taken shot towards an empty goal went just wide of the far post as Tucker breathed a sigh of relief.
Boulevard made their first substitution at the start of the second half, bringing on Stevie Wade for right-back Dean Boyles and switching George Smith from midfield to the defence with Neil Robinson going back into midfield.
But it was Vasco who continued to look the more determined team. Robinson, trying to get something started in midfield, was running the ball unchallenged when he slipped and lost possession.
Before he had time to recover, Carl Ainscough had stolen the ball, quickly fed a pass through the defence for Irving Burgess and then watched as the winger got the ball under control and steered it around the advancing Tucker before slotting it into an empty net.
An important save by Tucker to another Burgess breakaway in the 61st minute, following a Mallory pass, kept Boulevard in the match and they immediately responded by lifting their game after Robinson had gone off to be replaced by Shivaughn Smith.
The character that has made them a top team was starting to come through in the final 25 minutes of the match. They pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when Lloyd committed a freekick near the corner flag and Carlos Pearman met Herbie Bascome's cross to squeeze his header inside the post.
Soon after Boulevard had appeals for a handball in the area against Paul Towlson turned down by referee Roddy Burchall.
Pearman was booked for a foul on Mallory in the 79th minute as the St. John's Ambulance personnel came on at the same time to attend to the injured Wayne Richardson.
The Boulevard defender limped off to the dressing room as his team finished with 10 men, though they still created chances in injury through Pearman and Wade time to force the match into extra time.
