Bridge guests return the favour

with a record of one win and one loss during their brief tour.

Villagers were beaten by four wickets by hosts Western Stars on Saturday and rebounded the following day to beat Commercial League side Devonshire Stars on a faster scoring rate in a rain-affected affair.

Western Stars, forced to turn to second-team players and guests in the annual cup match because the first team were involved in the Open Knockout against Somerset, owed their victory at White Hill field to skipper Anthony Foggo.

Scores: Villagers 154, Western Stars 159 for six.

Foggo, coming in at number four, scored an unbeaten 54 and figured in an unbroken 59-run stand for the seventh wicket with guest David Jones, captain of Somerset Bridge.

In fact, Bridge players had a good day for Stars as Brian Gibbons bowled seven tidy overs and Tony Cheeseman, a century-maker the week before, captured five for 28 from nine overs of off-spin.

Before this match Bridge had called on Stars' Jeff Richardson and Arnold Manders to help in their Western Counties Cup challenge.

However, their early input almost went for nought as Villagers had Stars in trouble throughout the early stages of their innings with P.Atkinson and skipper K. Sang taking two wickets apiece.

Opener Perry Scott made 21 as did Jeff Pitcher, the consummate guest player.

And after Sang accounted for Lionel Cann (12) and Cheeseman (nine), Jones looked like being the last line of defence in partnership with the skipper.

The tall left-hander responded in kind with three boundaries in his knock of 27. Foggo stroked four boundaries.

Earlier, Villagers fell from a position of strength at 104 for two, keyed by Cheeseman's introduction as the fifth bowler used.

L.Douglas hit a six and a four in his top knock of 41 before being run to make the score 121 for four in the 35th over. Seven overs later, they were all out.

A.Campbell added 32, Sang 29 and S.Patel 26.

Villagers took their frustrations out on Devonshire Stars the next day at St.

John's field with a crushing victory. Scores: Villagers 242 for seven (reduced to 186 after rain stopped play), Devonshire Stars 68.

The Commercial League never got back into the match after letting the tourists escape from 27 for three.

Atkinson and Sang both made 44 in putting on 73 for the fourth wicket, then the burly Patel smashed 63 before being stumped for the second time on tour and C.Belle hit 32 not out.

Robert Dill, Jr. was the top Stars bowler with two for 32 while Gary Ascento claimed two for 33.

Stars' reply never got off the ground as their first four wickets fell for 17 runs. And after high man Lorenzo Tucker (23) and Gary Peniston (19) took the score to 57, the rest of the innings collapsed dramatically -- the last five wickets fell for one run.

P.McFarlane topped the Villagers' bowling with three for five and V.Mathison claimed three for eight in a five-over spell between them that led to the sudden finish.

Openers Douglas and Atkinson took two for 25 and two for 22 respectively.

ANTHONY FOGGO -- 54 not out.
