Canaries soar past O's
Association `A' team action at the weekend, while Canaries registered their first win of the season, a 3-0 result over Orioles.
On Saturday, Cardinals and Longtails played to a scoreless draw with neither team able to find a way through their opponents' defence. Shots on goal were rare and neither goalkeeper was put under any pressure. As the game progressed the pace slowed and a draw was a fair reflection of the game.
On Sunday, Canaries overpowered Police Orioles after Rhonda Rawlins put Cardinals ahead after 14 minutes from a short corner when she rounded the 'keeper and then scored from a narrow angle.
Canaries dominated the rest of the half without adding to the score. But 10 minutes into the second half, as Canaries piled on the pressure, Jacqui White hit the post after a good buildup involving Michelle Ming.
After 55 minutes White picked up the ball on the 25 yard line, beat several Orioles players and then played a one-two with Sarah Northcott inside the circle before scoring to put Canaries 2-0 up.
Five minutes later a beleaguered Orioles side saw Northcott pull the ball back from the goal-line for Emma Garron to tap in Canaries' third and final goal.
In `B' League action, Saturday's game between Orioles and Bluebirds provided some exciting action as Bluebirds won 2-1. After only seven minutes Bluebirds were awarded a penalty stroke after a goal-mouth scramble. Mandy Pantry placed the shot straight at 'keeper Mary-Ellen Jackson for an easy save.
Bluebirds continued to pressure Orioles and were finally rewarded with a goal by Georgina Adlam after 18 minutes. Orioles then came back into the game as Jayne Ward threatened from midfield.
Ten minutes into the second half Bluebirds gained their second penalty stroke but again failed to convert. Bluebirds' pressure was finally rewarded after 66 minutes as Ailsa Campbell fired in the Bluebirds' second goal. With only a minute remaining Joy Kelly scored a consolation marker for Orioles.
In Saturday's final game Cardinals edged Swifts 1-0 with a goal after 30 minutes by Eva Dillas. Both sides played some attractive hockey and although Swifts attacked strongly towards the end of the game they could not break down the Cardinals defence.
On Sunday Canaries and Cardinals battled to a 0-0 draw. Canaries had the better of the play with Caroline Hughes stopping any Cardinals attacks.
