Casiey waits for world cup call-up

to regain his spot in the Bermuda team for the final World Cup match with Canada.

A few eyebrows were raised when he was left out of the team for the second round matches and put on standby when the Bermuda squad departed for their three away matches against El Salvador, Jamaica and Canada.

But the North Village defender says he bears no ill-will after being omitted from the original squad of 20 which stayed at Warwick Camp although he was disappointed when informed.

He is still uncertain of the reasons he was overlooked, but insists he has no ill-feelings toward coach Gary Darrell and would gladly rejoin the squad without hesitation.

"I still want to be a part of the team, that's for sure,'' assured Caisey whose only World Cup appearance to date was in the first round, first leg match in Antigua.

While there have been rumours that Darrell has been considering bringing him back into the squad for the final match, the coach said on Wednesday that any inclusions would depend on the injury situation.

But it is believed that Darrell is anxious to have Caisey back to replace Voorhees Astwood who didn't perform well at fullback in the last two World Cup matches.

"If the coach called and asked me to train I would make myself available. It would be nice to hear him say that my service is required,'' said Caisey.

But what would be even better, admitted the defender, would be for Darrell to assure him of a place in the team, as a starter and not just a member of the 16.

"If I am chosen I wouldn't want it to be a case of the team being chosen on the Sunday of the game and to be told that I am on the bench. I like to prepare myself long beforehand. Knowing that I am definitely playing helps me to get ready in advance,'' he noted.

Caisey also indicated that should he be included in the lineup against Canada, he would also like to see Kevin Grant return at right back where skipper Meshach Wade has played in each of the World Cup matches.

With himself and Grant on either side of centre-backs Leroy Stevens and Shawn Smith he believes Bermuda would be best served in defence.

He also feels that the most formidable team Bermuda can field now would be one that includes Andrew Bascome and Kenny Thompson in midfield.

Darrell though appears to have more serious problems on his hands than strengthening positions. The poor turnout by the squad during Wednesday's first training session since the Canada match could mean that they need to be motivated in order to get back into the grove after the brief break.

The 1991-92 Most Valuable Player Award, chosen by a panel of sports reporters and announcers, will be announced in the near future according to sponsors The Ex-Artillery Men's Association.

President Leslie Lowe yesterday apologised for the lapse and assured that they were in possession of the ballots and would be giving the matter some attention.

"We definitely plan to release everything soon. We had hoped to do so earlier but we simply got caught up with other projects,'' said Lowe.

Originally they had planned to make the announcement at the BFA's annual prize presentation at the end of last season but the presentation was not held.

With the BFA not planning to hold any further prize presentations because of the lack of support from the clubs the MVP announcements will likely be made independently by the sponsors at the end of the season.

ALBERT CAISEY -- Hopes his services will br required against Canada.
