Challenge geared to find fastest footballer

Dandy Town's Carlos Smith, Chris Sabir of North Village, Phillip Clarke of Devonshire Cougars, PHC's Shawn Simons, Nathan Webb of Dandy Town and Vasco's Dwight Basden -- to name a few -- are all former school sprint champions.

The name of Mike Dill is also bound to come up when talking of speed on the soccer field. Next Friday evening, if the response from the players and clubs warrant it, a BFA/BTFA soccer challenge will go ahead at the National Stadium to determine the Island's fastest footballer.

The idea is the brainchild of BTFA Director and qualified soccer coach, Randy Benjamin, who first put it to the Bermuda Football Association about two weeks ago.

"It's been in the pipeline for about three weeks, but because of the BTFA AGM I wasn't able to pursue it as I would have liked,'' said Benjamin yesterday.

Benjamin is hoping to hold a series of races during the evening, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 4X100 metres relay, with the competition open to all clubs registered with the BFA.

Each club would be allowed two competitors per individual event and for the relay five names should be submitted from which four will compete.

The deadline for clubs wishing to register is Monday and the clubs can contact Benjamim at home at 295-5018 or 295-8953 (fax).

"I think it would be very enjoyable, a lot of fun, entertaining and productive,'' said Benjamin.

"I'm looking to get it started this year and make it an annual event.'' The scheduling of the event does not conflict with the league programme as next Sunday there are no First or Second Division matches because of the elimination round of the FA Cup.

All winners would receive a tracksuit and medals will be given to the first three in each event. The winning club will receive a full set of jerseys, shorts and socks plus two goalkeeper jerseys and shorts, designed personally by the winning club.

The second place club will receive a $500 gift certificate and the third team a $250 gift certificate.

The 800 metres race will start the events off at 6 p.m. and at 9 p.m. the prizes will be presented. There is an entry fee of $50 per club and admission for spectators will be $5. All funds will be shared equally between the two associations after expenses.
