Collieson and Birkenheim in showdown
are set for a showdown in today's men's A quarter-finals of the Pomander Gate Open.
The pair will meet at 5.00, having advanced after shock victories in the last few days. Collieson beat fourth seed Brian Way 6-3, 7-5 on the weekend and then followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Wilfred Gonzalves yesterday at noon to advance to the quarter-finals.
Birkenheim also beat a seeded player on his mission, getting by Martin Zolnai, the seventh seed, 7-5, 6-2. Third seed Gregg Frigerio is also through to the quarter-finals after defeating Monty Nearon 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals.
In women's A action on Tuesday evening, number three seed Sheila Gomez beat unseeded Allison Towlson 6-0, 6-3 as she continues her crusade to become Bermuda's number one ranked female player.
Second seed Debra Darrell also advanced the semi-finals, by beating Suzette Edmead 6-0, 6-1. It leaves the top three women's seeds still in the tournament, with Gomez taking on Darrell in one semi-final and top-ranked Donna Bradshaw going up against Diane Olchowik in the other semi-final.
Number one men's doubles seeds Steve Bean and Ricky Mallory moved into the semi-finals by defeating Oliver Bain and Bob Stewart 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday night.
The women's number one doubles seeds, Ailsa Campbell and Jacqui White, are also in the semi-finals and are joined by the unseeded pair of Denise Kyme and Wendy Salvia whom they play in the next round.
Donna Bradshaw is also in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles where she and Mike Curry beat Courtland Boyle and Dede Cooper 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday night. In the women's B, Erica Hendriks, who is unseeded, got by junior player Danielle Paynter 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals. More is expected to be seen of the promising Paynter in the future.
Most of the finals are scheduled for Sunday, starting at 10.15 with the women's A final and followed at noon with the men's A and women's B finals.
The women's doubles and men's B finals are slated for a 2.00 start, with the final match of the day being the men's doubles final at 3.00. The mixed doubles final is scheduled for Saturday.
