MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica -- PHC forwards Kyle Lightbourne and Sammy Swan tore the heart out of Wavers when they fired goals in the second half to give Bermuda a surprise victory at Little Wembley stadium yesterday.

The duo stunned a home crowd of about 2,000 with the two goals after Wavers had pinned down the Bermuda defence for long spells.

Lightbourne cracked the first goal after 60 minutes and Swan made it 2-0 after 83 minutes -- both goals coming against the run of play.

The game, which was a warm-up for Bermuda World Cup tie against Haiti this month and a vital build-up for Wavers' debut in the Caribbean Professional League shortly, provided both teams with useful work-outs. But it was clear in the end that both coaches will have plenty to work on -- especially in attack.

Bermuda's Gary Darrell made it no secret that it was his team's defence that enabled them to win.

Inspired by Leroy Stevens and Shawn Smith, the defence absorbed a tremendous amount of pressure in the first half when Wavers pushed forward with regularity.

"The defence kept us in the game,'' said Darrell. "Wavers dominated the first half, they were better physically than us, but I knew we could improve and when Elliott Jennings was taken from the attack to change with Sammy Swan things began to happen.'' Bermuda were more composed once this happened after 30 minutes and for the rest of the game Swan was a workhorse, giving Lightbourne support that was clearly lacking earlier.

Wavers were unlucky after eight minutes when national team player, midfielder Hector Wright sent a rocket from 16 yards which goalkeeper Dwayne Adams brilliantly tipped over.

Without key striker Paul Davis, being rested for tomorrow, Wavers found it hard to advance much further than the penalty box.

For the longest while Bermuda looked inept going forward and Lightbourne found it hard coping with efficient centre-backs Anthony Dennis and Clive Richards.

Bermuda's first chance came after 32 minutes when Swan fed Kenny Thompson who put his shot well wide from 16 yards. It was Swan who had the only shot on goal in the first half when after 43 minutes he powerfully struck a volley with his left foot from 15 yards, but straight at 'keeper Aaron Lawrence.

"We were able to identify our problems during the break and we just came into our game afterwards,'' said Darrell. "They all did what they had to do to win it in the end.'' Playing with more urgency Bermuda were more competitive even though Anglin and Wright put hard shots over from 14 yards.

With Kentoine Jennings replacing acting skipper Dennis Brown, who limped off with a calf injury, in midfield Bermuda seemed more formidable. Voorhees Astwood, in an unfamiliar left-back position also played with authority along with right-back Kevin Grant.

On the hour, Lightbourne stunned the crowd when Thompson sent him through to score from close range during a quick counter-attack.

Wavers had two long shots by David Falconor and another by Telroy Jones that Adams saved before Swan struck.

A counter-attack caught the defence in disarray and sighting substitute 'keeper Devon Dunkley mysteriously out by the penalty spot, Swan masterfully controlled a bouncing ball and lobbed the 'keeper from just outside the area.

For tomorrow, Darrell said that Albert Caisey will start at left-back and Kentoine Jennings probably for Dennis Brown. Elliott Jennings will stay in midfield with Swan up front with Lightbourne.
