Curry, Way double trouble

Michael Way and Mike Curry against a visiting duo from England turned out to be more hype than substance yesterday in the Coral Beach Invitational Tournament.

Way and Curry advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over David O'Sullivan and Chris Brown. The top seeds broke Sullivan in the third game and then broke Brown to take the first set in less than 30 minutes.

It wasn't until their backs were to the wall, and they were looking at a third set, that the local pair raised their game with Way holding at love for a 6-5 lead, then having three match points saved.

They settled it when a powerful drive down the alley by Curry was hit long by O'Sullivan for the match.

There were several other contests that merited attention as fifth seeds Heidi and Graham Boyle beat Wendy Gelhay and Coleridge Place 6-2, 6-2 in the open mixed doubles.

Boyle and Ricky Mallory, ranked third in the men's doubles, were easily beaten by the unseeded veterans Earl Leader and John Moore 6-2, 6-4.

Top doubles seeds Gill Butterfield and Curry beat Angela Stevens and Karl Dzakavic 6-1, 6-0 while second seeds Claire and Stuart Smith ousted Donna Bradshaw and Eldon Daniels 6-4, 6-2.
