David (Chick) Adams from neighbours St. George's.
The wily wrist spinner has expressed an interest in moving from the league and Knockout Cup champions and has not only been training with the Islanders but has also inquired about transfer forms, Delby Borden, chairman of cricket at St. David's, confirmed yesterday.
However, until Adams puts his signature on the forms, Borden will not consider the move final.
"He is interested in playing with us and has been training regular,'' disclosed Borden.
"He got some transfer forms from me, having asked us for one but he hasn't returned it. Until then you never know what's going to happen until the last minute. I told him he's more than welcome to training with us.'' If Adams completes the move to St. David's he will give their bowling a tremendous boost, as he is rated as the Island's top spin bowler. Adams was the second leading wicket-taker last season with 47 at an average of 14.38, which placed him 10th, and as such was an integral part of St. George's success.
Borden added: "If he's willing to go by our programme we would love to have him. He's a great spinner.'' The news of Adams' intention to transfer -- there have been rumours about for a few weeks -- comes just a few days after The Royal Gazette revealed that Wendell Smith had given up the St. George's captaincy.
No one was at liberty yesterday to say why Adams has become disenchanted with the club who have won the league three of the past five seasons.
Their neighbours have been in the news themselves since last season with James Pace replaced as captain after just one season with Herbie Bascome and Albert Steede moving to the club from Devonshire Rec. to act in the role of player/coach.
And with a number of promising youngsters coming through, including last season's Young Player of the Year Sammy Robinson and left-arm spinner Cameron Fox, St. David's are eagerly looking forward to the new season.
"I've already put a programme into place for the coming season,'' said Borden. "We have about six or seven juniors who can't play in the juniors anymore.'' Borden admits the lack of an organised second team league could hurt the club as they have 32 players ready to play cricket.
"We should have a pretty good programme,'' he said. "The club is putting so much into sports now.'' ON THE MOVE? -- David Adams is congratulated by St. George's fans during last year's Cup Match.
