Deal gives Kyle peace of mind
home today for a summer break from English Third Division team Walsall.
The Bermuda striker signed a new one year contract yesterday which will tie him to the club for the 1994-95 season and that, he admits, will give him peace of mind while he enjoys being back home with his family and friends.
Lightbourne failed to get a clause inserted into the contract that would enable him to get bonuses for the goals he scored, but otherwise he says he is very pleased with the club's offer which included a pay increase.
"Everything went according to plan,'' said Lightbourne yesterday after his meeting with manager Kenny Hibbitt. "I'm satisfied and they're satisfied.
"Now I can come home and look forward to going back to the club I was with at the end of the season. It will be a good thing for me to get to start at the beginning of the season.'' Lightbourne joined Walsall, and Scarborough before them, after the season had already started, so he is excited about starting off the season with the rest of his team-mates.
"Sometimes at the beginning of the season not all teams are into a pattern of play and if you're on top of your game and can get a few goals your season can go from there,'' he explained.
From his discussion with the manager, Lightbourne says his role in the team will also likely remain the same, though he is still expected to contribute in the goal scoring department. Last season he netted 10.
"He's (Hibbitt) looking forward to me playing in midfield again,'' Lightbourne said.
"I enjoy it. Everybody wants to be right up there scoring goals but there is less attention on you coming from a deeper position.'' The former Bermuda fast bowler does not know if cricket will be in his plans this summer, though there is nothing in his contract preventing him from playing.
"They don't really put any pressure on you,'' he explained. "The main thing is you don't come back injured.
"You also have to come back at the same weight so I'll have to take care of my body. I don't have a weight problem anyway.'' Lightbourne will be on the same flight today as another Bermudian, Shawn Goater, who just completed his season with Rotherham United. Goater is still negotiating a new contract with Rotherham.
