Several Sunfish sailors also joined in the races as they prepare for the upcoming Sunfish World Championships to be held in Bermuda this month.

Christian Luthi topped a competitive field in the Laser class, narrowly beating Brett Wright for fleet honours. Going into the last race, Wright led Luthi by one point but Luthi rose to the occasion by winning the final race while Wright could only finish third.

Andreas Lewin, after a poor start, came back strongly with top three finishes in the last four races to capture third overall.

Paul Fisher and Peter Bromby rounded out the top five places in the nine-boat fleet.

In the Optimist Dinghies, Travis Burland and Andrew Henderson dominated, each scoring three firsts and three seconds to tie for first place.

Bobby Beale placed consistently third, while Aaron Carvelho held down fourth spot for most of the afternoon.

Novice sailor O'Neill Lindsay performed well to earn fifth place in the seven boat fleet.

Five Sunfish sailors, meanwhile, competed on the same course as the Lasers with Paula Lewin finishing three points ahead of Malcolm Smith with Michael Butterfield a further two points back. Lee White finished fourth and David Frith fifth.

VOLLEYBALL VOL Bermuda Volleyball Association's final doubles event of the season attracted a good turn-out of 17 pairs at the weekend -- five competing in the A division and 12 in the B division.

The A final went to three games with Wendy Cummings and Mark Bell, and Lisa Dragon and Mark Monaghan sharing the opening two before Cummings and Bell ran away with the decider 11-1.

In the semi-finals Cummings and Bell had defeated Nancy Coelho and Frank Staten, and Dragon and Monaghan had got past Denise Somerville and Bruno Richard.

The B final saw Tony and Judy Readwin down Carol Mitchell and Randy Kowch 11-6, 11-9, having earlier defeated Cherie and Kelly Hartnett 11-4, 5-11, 11-1 in the semi-final.

Kowch and Mitchell had beaten Jennifer Clarke and Andy Yonda 4-11, 11-8, 11-6 in their semi-final clash.

CHESS CHS Richard Farleigh suffered his first loss since arriving on the Island when Richard Black won a one-sided game in the first round of the Olympiad Training tournament. That shattered Farleigh's string of 34 wins and two draws against local opposition.

The Mutual Risk tournament has begun and players can still enter by accepting a half-point bye for the first round.
