German tour results a secret -- even BFA anxious for info

Bermuda Football Association are as much in the dark as anyone else regarding performances by the Island's Under-23 squad during their current tour of Germany.

BFA General Secretary David Sabir admitted yesterday that he was disappointed that officials on the tour had contacted neither the Association nor the media with match results and information.

In a television report last night BFA Technical Director Burkhard Ziese indicated the team had won their third match 1-0 but gave few other details.

It is known Bermuda won their opening game against a Hamburg Under-21 side 2-0, but since then the national team have played at least three matches, although the results have not been relayed back to the Island.

Sabir said he had expected Ziese to have called the BFA office, but as of yesterday afternoon there had been no contact.

"The trouble is that the team are staying at a sports school and don't have immediate access to a telephone, so we can't call them.

"We have to wait for somebody to call us, give us a number and then we can call them back.'' The Under-23s are using the tour as a warm-up to November and December's two-leg Pan-Am Games qualifying tie against Canada in Jamaica.

The 19-player squad, captained by Meshach Wade, left Bermuda 12 days ago, opening their campaign with the match against Hamburg State Under-21.

Other games were scheduled against TSV Niendorf, a club just outside Hamburg, TSV Wedel, and a local Third Division club called VFL 93 Hamburg whom Ziese predicted would provide Bermuda with their toughest challenge.

A final match against Teutonia 05 Hamburg was slated for this Thursday with the squad due back on the Island this Saturday.

The players were also hoping to watch at least two German First Division matches during their stay.
