Gibbons included in world select
new heights yesterday when he was confirmed as a member of a World Select to tour India.
Gibbons, who plays for English Midlands club Halesowen, leaves on the three-game tour today after playing for Halesowen in a league match. Other team members based in the UK are scheduled to depart earlier in the day.
The Bailey's Bay all-rounder was ecstatic about his selection, pointing out that to be recognised and chosen to tour with such an elite group of players was obviously one of the highlights of his career.
"I'm really pleased about being chosen,'' he said from his home in England last night. "I don't know how many games I will play, but it will be a great pleasure just to be there with a high calibre of players.'' The Bermudian, who had talks with tour chairman Tony Blair prior to team selection, virtually sealed his position on Saturday when he slammed his third century of the season -- 129 against Mosely Ashfield.
Gibbons struck 11 fours and four sixes in helping Halesowen to a comfortable seven-wicket triumph. Mosely scored 210 and Halesowen replied with 211 for three.
Gibbons also did well with the ball taking four for 63 during a marathon spell of 27 consecutive overs, including 11 maidens.
Alvin Kallicharran, the former West Indies Test batsman, is the player Gibbons credits for paving the way for his inclusion in the squad.
Kallicharran and Gordon Greenidge are among the former West Indies Test players touring. Phil Simmons has pulled out because his club Leicestershire are involved in a four-day game.
Gibbons was unaware of the full make-up of the squad, but understood that South African fast bowler Allan Donald also had been included.
Gibbons must return to England by next Saturday in time to play in another league game for his club side.
