Goals galore as Rangers, Spinning Wheel run riot
Hamilton Parish finished with eight men and totally humiliated after Second Division leaders Southampton Rangers used them for target practice at Wellington Oval in what was expected to be one of the better match-ups of the FA Cup elimination round yesterday.
A year ago Parish were hammered 5-1 by Commercial Division team Robin Hood at the same stage of the competition.
That was the same score Rangers also beat Parish in an earlier league match this season and it was the margin they led by at the half as Parish were completely dominated -- just two seasons after reaching the semi-finals of this competition.
And even though Rangers' two-goal striker Alfred Wolffe limped off moments before the half, the fireworks continued in the second as the visitors scored a further six goals. It got so bad that Quinn Outerbridge, who came on as a 27th minute replacement for full back Clinton Webb, walked off the field in disgust, leaving his teammates to battle short-handed.
They were also hurting from the sending off of Larry Allen for a professional foul in the 71st minute and the loss of Devrae Hollis who limped off with an ankle injury in the closing minutes.
The goal glut began in the fifth minute when Herbie Dillas opened his account.
Wolffe made it 2-0 in the 15th minute before Craig Darrell added the third in the 24th.
Further goals by Wolffe in the 41st and Dillas in the 45th gave Rangers a comfortable lead at the half with Parish's only reply being a 43rd minute penalty which Ernest (Joe) Lathan converted.
The misery for Parish continued in the 50th when Phillip Burgess steered the ball past his own 'keeper, Walter Brangman, at the near post following a cross from Darrell.
Three goals then came in a five minute period as Burgess made amends by scoring Parish's second in the 64th minute, after Eugene Pitt and Darrell had netted Rangers' seventh and eighth goals.
Dillas completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute and then Jason Raynor put Rangers into double figures with the 10th seven minutes later. Sub Dijuan Simons closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute when Outerbridge took off his shirt and made an early exit.
Spin. Wheel 11, P. Officers 0 A break-out occurred at PHC Stadium yesterday afternoon, but while Prison Officers were on hand they could do little to prevent the perpetrators, Spinning Wheel, from getting away.
After a lethargic first half Wheel led 3-0, but then exploded with eight goals in the second half.
Leading the goal rush was Des Minors, the lanky striker netting four times so duplicating his feat of last year when he also hit four, then as a member of Robin Hood as they bundled out Hamilton Parish.
Aiding Minors in the goal scoring department were Allan Fray (two), Wendell Simons, Craig Woodburn, Chris Furbert, Gregory Raynor and Prison Officers' full-back Reginald Coddrington, who compounded a miserable day for the defence by putting through his own goal.
Minors struck his first after 22 minutes as he was set up by fellow front-runner Keith Bell, who after being put through squared the ball to an onrushing Minors.
Next to take the stage was Fray, as the former First Division player displayed clinical finishing in scoring twice inside three minutes.
The first occasion saw Fray rob a slow reacting Carlton Fraser deep in Officers territory and volley a dipping effort past Dwayne Bean. Fray then got on the end of an overlapping move by Stevie Tucker which left a simple tap-in.
Meanwhile, the second half saw Minors add three more goals with others coming from Simons, substitute Woodburn, Raynor and Coddrington before Furbert slammed in the last via the penalty spot.
Somerset Eagles 4, KPMG 1 Eagles made a simple task appear difficult when they took on the challenge of their Commercial Division opponents at White Hill Field.
The heavily favoured Second Division side pinned down KPMG for most of the first half but frustration set in when their forwards lacked the finishing touch when it counted most.
Despite their dominance, Eagles were shocked after 25 minutes when, during a rare attack, KPMG took a 1-0 lead after Joe Brunsen crossed from the left for Neil Clemens to hammer home from close range.
Sean Dill eventually got Eagles level when he fired home a penalty after 40 minutes, awarded after Ray Lumley had fouled Oscar Riley. Dill then made it 2-1 three minutes later when he scored on a breakaway.
Eagles coasted to victory, scoring twice more through Everett Wellman after 76 minutes and Clarkie Riley after 89.
