Athletic Club 5K, is slated for this Sunday.

And with some divisions still to be settled and a number of runners needing to complete one more event in order to be eligible for the grand prize draw, the field is expected to be a strong one.

But last year's winner and course record holder Mark Perry is unlikely to be among the starters.

Perry, who won in 15 minutes, 47 seconds last year and holds the record of 15.41, is still suffering from a knee injury and isn't expected to return to competition until the fall.

However, last year's ladies winner Karen Adams (18.10) is expected to defend her title. The ladies record is held by Sandra Mewett, who covered the course in 17.34.

The race starts at 9.30 a.m. from Victoria Park in Hamilton and follows a route along Cedar Avenue, St.John's Road onto Berkeley Road, North Shore Road, St. John's Road again, and back to the park via Pitts Bay Road, Serpentine Road and Park Road.

At the end of the race, the KPMG series winners will be announced, all of whom will win trips to the Falmouth Road Race in Massachusetts this summer as will the winners of two draw tickets for those who competed in at least eight of the series' races.

A draw winner from all of Sunday's race entrants will also win a colour TV.

Proceeds from this year's race will go to the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Entry forms can be picked up at The Athletic Club, Sportseller, The Pro Shop and Sports R Us, and must be returned by 5.00 p.m. on Friday.

Jamal Hart emerged the fastest runner in Sunday's Ed Sherlock Five Mile Handicap Race, capturing his second win in two weeks.

But Hart, who recently won the Bermuda Regiment Breakfast Race, was not first across the line.

Facing a 10 minute handicap, he had to hand that honour to Duncan Scott.

Runners were given handicaps according to past performances, ranging from 10 minutes for the more established runners, five minutes for those slightly slower and zero for those having little previous race experience.

Hart clocked 30 minutes, 11 seconds over the distance followed by Sylvester Pierre (30:29) and Ray Ming (31:52). Ming was also first Master (over 40).

However, on handicap Scott came out tops with an adjusted time of 39:10.

Delbert Doars was next at 39:54 followed by Hart (40:11).

Among the women Margaret Leonard grabbed the honours in both categories, clocking 38:54 which converted to 43:54. Following close on her heels was Samantha Miller (38:55, 43:55) and Cynthia Thomas (40:12, 45:12).

Tops in the junior category was Kwame Tucker (41:01, 46:01), while Nigel Chudleigh (42:13, 47:13) won the senior Masters title.
