Hat-trick for Sousa
BASA pool on Saturday there was a sweep in all age groups in the girls' competition. That had been expected in some age groups but not in others.
In the eight and under age group, Brianna Holmes of Triangles took first place in both the backstroke and medley events, edging out team-mate Meghan Jones who had to settle for second place.
Emma Rego of Sharks took first place in the nine and 10 category in both events, the 200 metres back and 200 metres medley. A relative newcomer to competitive swimming in just her first year, she is a natural athlete who has also won two cross-country races in the primary girls division this season.
As expected Jessica Sousa of Sharks won all three events in the 11-12 age group, well ahead of all other competitors in the 400 metres freestyle, 200 metres backstroke and 200 metres individual medley.
Elisha Miller of Harbour also swept all the events in the girls 13-14 division. Abigail Madeiros of Sharks took second place in the freestyle and backstroke events while team-mate Zoe Roberts was second in the medley.
Alicia Mullan won all three of the events in the girls open category, making a fine comeback after major surgery in July.
No one swimmer dominated the boys events although Paul Fox and Stephen Fahy, both of Harbour Club, each took two events in their respective age groups, 11-12 and open.
In the boys eight and under age group, Stephen Kenny of Triangles won the backstroke while Roy-Allan Burch of Sharks won the medley event. Paul Murphy of Triangles won the nine and 10 boys 200 metres backstroke and was second to Scott Simmons of Harbour in the individual medley.
Nuri Latham of Sharks edged out rival Paul Fox in the individual medley, settling for second place in the 400 metres freestyle and the 200 backstroke.
Ronald Cowen of Sharks, Stephen Troake of Triangles and Trevor Nelson of Harbour each won one event in the 13 and 14 boys, taking the 400 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 individual medley respectively.
Trevor Nelson of Harbour took the 200 backstroke in the open category while team-mate Stephen Fahy posted the fastest times in the 400 free and 400 IM.
