Junior riders Sara Leighton and McKeisha Smith have just returned from Jamaica where they competed in an international combined training competition,

Nine-year-old Leighton did particularly well, finishing fourth in equitation, third combined and first in show jumping in her division. She also won the overall jumping title against some riders nearly twice her age.

Smith competed in the 14 to 18-year-old age group and was second in equitation, third in combined training and first in dressage, which put her second overall.

The event involved teams of three riders from Jamaica, who had five teams, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands, Barbados, Panama, United States and Bermuda competing in dressage and show jumping combined.

There were three age groups of competition, nine to 11 years, 12 to 13 and 14 to 18. Two riders from each age group went through to the finals after preliminary rounds held over three days.

The two Bermuda riders teamed up with a Jamaica rider after the third member of the Bermuda team, Tiffany Heslop, was forced to withdraw at the last minute when she broke her arm.

Leighton and Smith were accompanied by Susan Leighton who went as the official coach and chaperone.

SAILING SLG Reigning World International One Design champion Peter Bromby returned to action following a week's lay-off showing no ill effects as he surged to two first-place finishes on Saturday in the current series for the John Bluck Memorial Trophy.

The combined results vaulted Bromby from seventh to second but Martin Siese, with a third and second, continues to hold a commanding lead over the field standing on 101 points compared to 281 for Bromby. Also making waves was Christian Luthi (33 points), who moved to third overall on the strength of fifth and fourth-place finishes.

Another interesting series involves the Etchells for the Elvstrom Bowl where Tim Patton and Scott Simmons continued their jostling match.

Patton took advantage of a failure to finish by Simmons to regain the top spot he had relinquished to his rival the previous weekend. After garnering four-and-three-quarter points on Saturday, Patton (151 ) now leads Simmons (203 ) by five-and-a-half, the largest so far. The duo of Tony Knap and John Thompson remain locked in third place at 223 points.

Meanwhile, Michael Emery (12) continued to make forecasting the J-24s foregone conclusion, and in spite of a disqualification in race five looks certain to take the Berry Bowl. Kate Williams (173 ) and Teresa Chatfield (193 ) occupy the next two positions separated by only two points.

There were no races among the Luders as only three boats showed up.

SOFTBALL SOF Athletics used up their three home run allowance for the match in the first inning as their number three, four and five hitters went for solo shots in Monday night's 17-14 loss to G/C in slowpitch action.

Athletics led 3-2 in that first inning but G/C turned it around after using their big hits a lot wiser as theirs came with runners on the bases. They scored eight runs off eight hits in the fourth to take a 12-6 lead and three more off four hits in the fifth put the game in the bag.

The winning RBI came from Chris Andre's double in the fifth, which scored two runs. Winning pitcher Randy Richardson went two-for-three, including two homers, a sacrifice fly and six RBI while Mike Reed went three-for-four.

For Athletics, Tony Williams had a four-for-five night from two homers with three RBI while Mark Williams went two-for-five. Mike Glasford was the losing pitcher.

Continental Casualties and PM blasted 36 runs between them in their match, which Continental won 20-16. Both teams had big innings as Con-Cas hit 10 runs off nine hits in the third to lead 15-5.

However, PM came back in the fifth when they scored eight runs off nine hits to briefly tie the game 15-all.

Con-Cas scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead for good. Pat Peresse, Dick Hudson and Craig Prall all hit home runs in their three-for-fours for Con-Cas as George Jackson and Richard Davage also went three-for-four with one homer each.

The winning pitcher was Mark Kaplen while John Freyer was the loser. Arthur Andersen scored freely in every inning to end their game with B/S in the fifth inning via the mercy rule after leading 22-2.

Nick Hinton had a perfect four-for-four and Mark Cordeiro three-for-four, both with one home run, while Roger Cash had a homer and eight RBI in his three-for-four.

For B/S, Trevor Brookes went two-for-two. Winning pitcher was Wes Toavs while Darren Budd suffered the loss.

The other game saw Kempe/Whittle hammer Tucker's Tees 15-3 on the outside diamond, which was hit by bad light in the sixth inning. However, the result was already decided as Kempe/Whittle were well ahead.
