Late goal denies Cougars

(2-2 after 90 mins) Devonshire Cougars were denied a morale-boosting first win of the season in last night's FA Cup second round tie at Devonshire Rec by a spirited Prospect side who throroughly deserved a second chance to progress.

Prospect, languishing in mid-table in the Second Division, were more than a match for their struggling First Division counterparts, twice fighting back to deny Cougars, who let a 2-0 half-time lead slip and were again in front in extra-time.

Cougars took the lead after 17 shapeless minutes, Mark Smith breaking clear on the right and providing a low cross for Azjame Zuill to plant home first time with his left foot.

But Prospect hit back strongly and, if Daniel Reece had shown more composure in front of goal on an admittedly slippery surface where control was tricky, they could have built a commanding lead.

Cougars notched their second against the run of play nine minutes before the break. Zuill, behind most of the good things that Cougars did, was left in acres of space on the right and although Philip Clarke failed to control his centre first time, he had enough time to swivel and shoot past a floundering Prospect defender on the line.

Prospect finally got the goal their football deserved six minutes after the break and it was the impressive John Richmond who got it. Lawes' hopeful ball evaded two Cougars defenders and the Prospect striker kept a cool head to round Mark Jennings and shoot home when the ball fell at his feet.

Seven minutes later Prospect had a great chance to pull level when Jennings was adjudged to have impeded Lawes. But Lawrence Smith's spot-kick was blocked.

Prospect threw on Dwayne Leverock for Reece with 14 minutes left and the move paid off when the heavyweight striker forced the ball over the line with six minutes left on the clock.

Mark Smith restored Cougars lead five minutes into extra-time, chesting Zuill's cross over the line but Prospect earned a replay when Lawes provided a lovely centre from the right in the 114th minute which Richmond swept home.
