Net gains elude Boulevard, Vasco
they clash at Somerset (8 p.m.) in a replay of the first FA Cup semifinal.
Both engaged in scoreless draws over the weekend during league play, but know that only goals will guarantee their survival in this cup competition.
Four were tallied a week ago when the pair last met as the Blazers fought from two goals behind to grab a lifeline against their hard-tackling opponents.
Following Sunday's match against North Village, Boulevard's coach Gary Mallory emphasised that his team needed to take a "get-tough attitude'' if they were going to hold onto the title won last year against Devonshire Colts.
"We are the defending champions and are going out harder than ever to defend what belongs to us,'' said Mallory. "They (Vasco) want it and we want it, you got to give it to them. They played pretty good so far, but we've just got to put our chances away.
"We gave it away (last game) and as a result they still have a chance. But we are going out hard for it on Tuesday night. One good thing is that there were no injuries on Sunday and we will have a full squad to choose from.'' Long the Achilles heel of Boulevard has been goal-scoring -- or rather the lack of it. For all the fine build-up and their intricate ball control style, the Blazers simply have not been able to put chances away with any regularity.
Kenny Hill has shown flashes of brilliance, but not the consistency required of a premier striker, while other forwards Neil Robinson and Stevie Wade have also had little positive effect, bouncing in and out of the starting line-up.
Vasco, meanwhile, have had similar problems finding the range, but have shown the ability to explode at any moment. Their main problem has been allowing scores by opponents, a weakness exposed a week ago when they were unable to hold onto a two goal margin.
The back four of Donovan Livingston, Paul Towlson, Earl Richardson and Colin Lloyd have allowed 26 goals to be scored on them in just 15 league matches.
They further buckled under unrelenting pressure from the Blazers and it might be wise for the latter to pursue that avenue early.
The winner of tonight's clash will face either Dandy Town or Devonshire Colts in the final at National Stadium on April 10.
