Onions bounce back to blank Canadians
A determined Onions side came storming back after their first defeat against The Rest just 10 days ago and produced an exhilarating display of attacking rugby at National Sports Club yesterday.
The highlight of the game came midway through the first half with a try by Ron Hook, which many considered to be the best seen at Nationals this year.
The ball passed through 10 pairs of hands starting with Andrew Correia and involved several forwards including Peter Simons, 48, who belied his age with a sterling performance.
In the first half, Dennis Faries scored a try after a penalty kick by Andrew Correia had ricocheted off the post. Andre Simons scored an excellent touchline conversion to starting the scoring at 7-0.
At half-time with the score 15-0, Stoney Creek were determined to make a comeback. But the Onions were equally determined not to be beaten.
The second half only resulted in a further penalty for the Onions, converted by Andre Simons and sadly Andrew Correia left the field with a concussion after some aggressive play by Stoney Creek.
In fact, the referee had to send off one of the Canadians for a dangerous head tackle on Danny Soares.
Tomorrow at 4 p.m., Stoney Creek play the President's XV, which is bound to produce the tourists' best performance as they attempt to go away with more than one win.
The touring side beat the Bermuda Second XV on Saturday and lost to the national team on Sunday.
ANDREW CORREIA -- Concussion.
