Personal bests turned in at Heritage Meet
Stadium, some encouraging performances were turned in by locals youngsters with their sights on the Junior CAC Championships in Trinidad and Tobago in July.
Damien Simmons and Damon Ming both had personal best times in the 400 and 800 metres while Sharif Taylor's winning time of 49.5 seconds in the 400 metres was faster than his recent Carifta time of 49.8.
Gina Cann, another recent Carifta competitor, won both the 100 and 200 metres while Michael Donawa had his fastest time of the year in the 1500 metres where he placed second to Dave Campbell of Canada.
Campbell's winning time was 4:00.4 while Donawa was second in 4:05.4 and Garon Wilkinson third in 4:44.2. Donna Watson was the lone female participate in the 1500 metres (4:57.6) because Jennifer Fisher opted to compete in the 200 metres, having earlier won the 800 metres in 2:10 ahead of Watson and Freedom Trott.
Donawa says he was pleased with his time, having being paced by Campbell. "I ran pretty much even splits,'' said Donawa afterwards. "I was trying to run as close to four minutes as possible.
"What's really lacking in my running is high intense competition, such as the Carifta. But it was not too bad, I was happy with my time.'' Rohaan Simons, who missed Carifta because of his brother's wedding, upstaged Warwick Sec. schoolmate, Stephen Woodley in both the high jump when both cleared the bar at six-feet-63 inches but missed at six-feet-nine.
"I wasn't too pleased. It feels good winning but when you know you can do better it doesn't feel as good,'' said Simons of his performance. Both he and Woodley -- the only two jumpers -- admitted they would have preferred more competition, Woodley having jumped seven-feet at Carifta.
Simons also won the triple jump with a leap of 14.32 metres, with Donte Hunt second (14.29 metres) and Woodley third (13.87).
High jumper Nicky Saunders preferred to run the 400 metres, the last event of the night, but felt a tinge in his hamstring on the first corner and pulled out. Taylor won with Cal Simons second in 51.7.
In the men's 100 metres, Antoino Arrendel of Boston was first in 10.8 with Atiba Tucker second in 10.9 and Keivon Richardson third in 10.9. Richardson won the 200 metres in 21.8 with Tucker second in 22.0 and Arrendel third in 22.0.
Primary school winners included Patrina Swan in the 400 metres girls in 1:04.9 and the 200 metres in 28.2. Jamiko Gibbons was first in the 100 metres boys in 13.0 while Sandra Savory won the girls 100 metres in 13.4 and Nasir Wade the 400 metres primary boys in 1:03.2.
