Readwin gains upper hand to topple Gonsalves

International Tournament, was lured into the bright and brilliant Bermuda sunshine by Englishman Tony Readwin and was convincingly beaten 6-3, 6-2 at the Tennis Stadium yesterday.

Readwin gained the early advantage in the match when he broke Gonsalves at 30 in the third game and jumped off to a 4-1 lead in the second set on his way to victory.

"Although I lost, it was an enjoyable match,'' said Gonsalves.

But the seeding ran true to form on the 10th day of the two-week tournament when the second seeded pair of Wendy Gelhay and Nick Frost took advantage of some inconsistent play, and decision, by the fourth seeds Diane Olchowik and Jerome Bradshaw in the semi-finals of the Mixed Doubles.

Gelhay and Frost won 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 in a match that saw Bradshaw surprisingly change his style of play following the first set, which he and his partner won in rather easy fashion.

Bradshaw, despite the fact that his partner had held her own in the first set, suddenly became a ballhawk covering both sides of the court to the delight of his opponents, surprise of the spectators and left his partner in a state of uncertainty.

This turned out to be the break Gelhay and Frost needed and they took less than 30 minutes to win 12 games in a row for the match and a place in the finals.

The interesting encounter between Sandy Brown and Eugene Simmons never came off because Brown, failing to recover from a pulled muscle during his victory over Allan Simmons, had to withdraw thus allowing Eugene Simmons a free passage to the next round.

Meanwhile Donna Bradshaw and Mike Curry, the top seeds in the Mixed Doubles, had an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory over Estelle Knights and Hugo Mayers, while Earl Leader defeated David Furbert 6-4, 6-2 while Oliver Bain defeated Mark Ray 6-1, 6-3.
