Richardson when he achieved another personal best in Tampa, Florida, on the
Last month in Florida, Richardson achieved his best performance in over five years when he made a pass and ran two (buoys) at 35-off in the slalom at the Ski Paradise qualifier in Sun Set Lakes.
But on the weekend he went one better when he made a pass and ran two-and-a-half at 35-off, which also qualified him for the US Nationals in West Palm Beach in Florida. However, Richardson's participation in the Nationals is in doubt because he is not a US citizen.
Richardson's PB placed him second out of 10 in that round. In the second round of competition for the Mother's Day tournament, the following day, he lost the handle when on 35-off, but his score was still good enough for a first-place finish.
"The goal I've been trying to work on for the last six years is to make a certain pass in tournaments,'' explained Richardson. "I've finally broken through the barrier, I've been doing it consistently in practice at 32-off and what I've been doing in practice I'm making in tournaments.'' Added Richardson: "I'm skiing really good and was trying to use this tournament to qualify for the Super Stars in Grovelan, Florida, on July 9 and 10.
"All the tournaments now are a build-up to the Group I Championships in Colombia in August. One other major stop is the Pan Am Games in Argentina, which is the closest step to the Olympic Games.'' Richardson said there is a good chance that water-skiing will be a part of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
The International Olympic Committee is giving a grant to the International Water-Ski Federation in a bid to broaden the appeal of the sport. Richardson is taking part in the programme and will be involved in the Caribbean region, spending time coaching in different islands.
