Round-the-world sailor runs into trouble
Commitment hit a Police launch -- just weeks before he completes his round-the-world trip.
The 47-foot yacht, which arrived in Bermuda on Thursday after nearly two years at sea, suffered engine failure in St. George's and damaged the Police launch Heron One .
Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said Commitment was manoeuvring and about to leave Market Wharf at about 2.30 p.m. when it collided with the launch, which was moored alongside Ordnance Island. "It appears that it was engine failure and therefore an accident, so it is unlikely prosecution will follow,'' he said.
Heron One received damage to her port top side, rub-rail and fibreglass hull, said Sgt. Dale. She would be slipped for inspection. There was not thought to be any damage to Commitment , he added.
Mr. Pinkney has called into Bermuda en route to Boston, where he will complete his circumnavigation.
