Skipper Gary Brangman and top batsman Jeff Richardson are expected to return from Barbados today, in time for Western Stars' tough season-opener against
The day's top fixture is one of a full schedule of eight listed as the 1994 season begins.
Stars, however, are not the only team to be boosted by a players cutting short a vacation as St. George's opener Dexter Smith is is also preparing to return to the island today from watching Test cricket in Barbados so as to play against his former team.
"I don't want to miss an important game like this one,'' he said Thursday from Barbados.
Smith was booked to leave Barbados for Antigua for the fifth Test, as was Cleon Scotland of Western Stars. However, Scotland has not changed his plans and will not be back until next week.
St. George's and Western Stars will be renewing their rivalry immediately after being involved in three fierce battlles last season.
Western Stars won the Camel Cup after beating the east enders in the semifinal -- the only defeat suffered by them during the season. But St. George's bounced back to win the clashes between the two in both the league and knockout.
Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's match the two teams are expected to be challenging for the league title right until the end of the season.
But one newcomer to the league race is expected to be Willow Cuts who improved their strength by adding players like batsmen Davon Wade, Jermaine Warner and Dwight Basden from Somerset and the young fast bowler Garry Williams from Southampton Rangers.
Willow Cuts will be involved in another interesting clash when they travel to Lord's to meet St. David's.
The home team will be anxious to prove that they will not be affected by the decision of Albert Steede to stay with Devonshire Rec after initually agreeing to join the Islanders as player-coach.
Herbie Bascome is the new skipper at St. David's and he could be in for a severe test in his debut when he goes up against new-look Cuts.
Another opener which could produce a close result is the clash at Police field between Police and Devonshire Rec.
Police will again be counting on support from regulars like last year's skipper Dennis Archer, Roger Blades, Donovan Livingston, Ferdinand Thorne and Dwayne Leverock but Devonshire will be just as confident this season even though they have a new skipper in Anthony Edwards.
Steede will be Edwards' vice captain while the team will remain a force with all-rounder Anthony Amory expected to play a full season and regulars like Lloyd Morrison, Donald Norford, veteran Erskine Smith and Mark Trott again adding support.
Other matches: Somerset Bridge v Cleveland, White Hill; Flatts v Hamilton Parish, Devonshire Rec.; Somerset CC v Nationals, Somerset CC; Bailey's Bay v PHC, Sea Breeze Oval; Warwick v Social Club, Southampton Oval. All games start at 11 a.m.
