NETBALL NET 7-Up Netts all but clinched the Sunday League title when they blasted a hopelessly overmatched Boulevard 41-7.

The win, their 14th in a row, moved 7-Up Netts to 28 points, six ahead of second place Olympic Panthers, who have three games to play.

However, while Panthers can catch the leaders provided they win and Panthers lose all their remaining games, Panthers would also have to post an average victory margin of more then 100 points a game to stand a chance.

Panthers posted a 50-17 win over Cooper and Lines on Sunday to keep alive their flickering title hopes.

Meanwhile, in matches involving teams playing out the string Netts edged PCC in a thriller 34-33 while Wolves got the better of Running Rebels 37-25.

SAILING SLG The past weekend saw the dawning of the Optimist Dinghy Spring Series at Sandys Boat Club, with the first four races of the Optimist Pram Cup being sailed.

Under favourable 12-16 knot south-easterly breezes young Travis Burland seized the moment to record three first place finishes, which added to a second gave him the early series lead at 41 points.

Still, the burgeoning helmsman did not have everything go his way, especially during the opening race.

Midway through Burland indeed appeared to have a comfortable advantage over Jeff Steynor and Jason Simons. However, an excellent upwind leg by Simons had him seize the lead, leaving the other two to battle for second place.

Burland had the last laugh though in the final three outings with the closest anyone coming to usurping him occurring in the third race. On that occasion it was the late arriving William Thompson leading around the final mark, only to be undone by good tacking from Burland who won by a mere boat length.

Trailing Burland in the points standings are Steynor (12 points), Simons (123 ) and Thompson (13).

Racing continues on Sunday in Mangrove Bay with the first race starting at 11 a.m. All Optimist Dinghy sailors are welcome, SBC members and non-members. For further information contact Martin Siese at 295-7823.

SOFTBALL SOF A total of 10 games were played in the Commercial Softball League over the weekend, but the one featuring AIM against Anfossi & Butterfield must go down as one for the history books.

While covering just five innings there were yet 54 runs scored as AIM emerged 40-14 victors.

Understandably there were not many `swings and misses' with several members enjoying solid nights at the plate.

None were more prolific than Fraser Gray, who laced six hits for five RBI.

Teammate Rod Thoms included a home run in his package of five hits that accounted for a further six runs while El James likewise blasted a home run and had five RBIs.

Gray was also the winning pitcher, while a `bomb-struck' Tony Smith was saddled with the loss.

In other games Wildcats edged Ace Hogs 8-7, Bobcats outlasted Team Fashions 18-13 and Elbow Beach pelted Cooper and Lines 16-1.

Saturday witnessed Chips downing Docksiders 17-16 with Butterfield & Steinhoff later turning the tables on Chips 18-8 and Powerscourt blowing out Arctic Penguins 19-4.

Results from Friday saw Sandys best Arthur Anderson 17-3, Kempe & Whittle bolt past Bacardi Bats 12-9 and PTB defeat Centre Re 22-18.
