Somerset made to pay for missed chances
It's said charity begins at home.
Somerset proved this theory by squandering a host of chances to allow Devonshire Colts to escape the West End with a point.
Jerry Webb scored the Trojans' lone goal in the first half but he and Anthony Bailey were the prime reasons they did not come away with at least a three-goal victory.
The match saw the forced return of Lorenzo Symonds and the coach's influence led to Colts drawing level through Aljame Zuill.
With up to seven players injured, Symonds was dressed for the first time in two years and made his entry only 27 minutes into the match for Jason Smith.
Much of the same defensive problems that plagued Colts in their recent loss to PHC were prevalent again as Somerset threatened to run riot.
Rodney Bascome shot just wide after six minutes and the first of Bailey's misses came in the ninth minute, a tame header from close range that a diving Randy Darrell saved.
Colts' first dangerous move in the 18th minute was thwarted by Paul Place whose desperate clearance from Ellington Weldon saved a sure goal.
A minute later Somerset took the lead. Jason Smith was dispossessed near the half leaving Bascome to go one on one with Dennis Williams on the left flank.
Bascome worked toward the corner flag before slipping Williams and passing inside to Reggie Tucker. The resultant pass was met sweetly by Webb and Darrell was beaten low to his right.
Smith was instantly switched to midfield in place of Derek Wright and soon after left altogether for Symonds.
Symonds' influence was not immediately seen but he eventually got them to play a more composed brand of soccer.
Still, Somerset had their chances.
Bascome was again sent down the left wing, in the 38th minute, and centred for an onrushing Bailey to head past the near upright with Darrell out of the picture. Then, four minutes later, Webb was through on a breakaway after beating the offside trap. He snaked past the advancing Darrell but, to the amazement of his Somerset fans and team-mates, refused to slot the ball home with his right foot and meandered to the right side of the area.
It was much of the same in the second half for Somerset and this time they paid for it.
Only two minutes after the restart, Kevin Bailey shot over after Darrell muffed a punched clearance.
Colts' Zuill let his intentions be known with a header that rocketed into the chest of Somerset goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson from a Williams cross. With his next touch, the lanky forward scored.
In a move that contained at least 10 passes, Craig Smith made the breakthrough as he dashed past Shaun Riley on the left and hit a hard, low drive that Hendrickson did well to parry. The 'keeper would be given no reprieve as Zuill pounced quickly to score from eight yards.
Somerset responded by replacing an unhappy Bascome with Kwame Tucker. Tucker should have helped put Trojans back in front but Anthony Bailey missed another header.
Anthony Wilson, out of position at the back post on the previous move, made amends in the 66th minute by heading clear with Tucker waiting for Webb's tantalising cross.
Colts brought on Ricky Nesbitt for ailing Jermaine Belboda with 20 minutes left. Symonds moved back to his customary sweeper's position, thus completing a remake of the heart of a suspect defence.
Nesbitt, who possesses a cannon-like right foot, showed some flashes but ultimately shot from too far outside his range to test an efficient Hendrickson.
The pressure was on at the other end in the 74th minute and this time Webb decided to use his right foot, but Darrell was equal to the task and turned the sidefooted effort around the post for a corner.
But, three minutes later, the forward's hesitancy came to the fore again as he wasted a good position, picked out by Bailey's pass, and eventually shot into the side-netting.
Colts were much improved on the first half but still have to be concerned about the number of opportunities they are allowing opponents. Somerset, on the other hand, can ill-afford another shooting day like yesterday's and hope to maintain a high standing in the First Division.
