Stage set for fitted dinghy opener
1992 Bermuda Fitted Dinghy Association season gets under way.
Somerset boats Echo and Challenger will be bidding to repeat their domination of the May 24 season-openers hosted by the St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club.
Challenger , last season's overall winner, began 1991 with back-to-back victories in the Anniversary Cup and the Masters Cup.
Her wins followed hot on the heels of the Heritage Trophy success of Somerset stablemate Echo , who was third overall at season's end.
The Heritage Trophy race gets under way at 11 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the Anniversary Cup at 2 p.m. and the Masters Cup at 4 p.m.
Contest , the new Royal Bermuda Yacht Club dinghy that came on strong over the latter part of last season to clinch the runner-up spot, could be one to watch on Sunday.
And the St. George's boat Victory can never be ruled out on May 24. Victory will be the lone representative from the east end, with Venture absent from the action for the second season in a row.
Elizabeth , who enjoyed just one victory last year in her first season of racing for the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, is hoping for better luck this time.
Meanwhile, Bloodhound , the Bermuda Maritime Museum challenger that propped up the fleet last year after numerous sinkings, is aiming to stay afloat and get the win that eluded her in 1991.
The starting sequence for the Heritage Trophy race will be worked out by a handicap system based on the boats' tonnage. The system was applied to all races before last season, when a new start format was devised.
The format, determined by the finishing order in the previous race, will be used for all subsequent races.
CHALLENGER -- Defending two cups on Sunday.
