Town investing in youth
champions, Dandy Town, have quickly taken steps to revamp their youth programme -- with First Division stars playing a key role.
Coach Mark Trott, who was also recently voted coach of the year, will oversee the whole revamping process which involves players like Wayne Campbell, Anthony Manders, Lloyd Christopher, Troy Lewis and Devarr Boyles coaching the youth teams. Troy Harvey will co-ordinate the programme.
The emphasis is again being placed on the club's six youth teams to assure continuity, while at the same time using the academic qualifications of some of their senior players to also help improve the image of the club.
"It's a whole restructured approach,'' said Trott yesterday. "This is the first time we've had all our players back from school abroad and five of them will actually be coaching the youth teams.
"We've taken Devarr Boyles from the Alliance Division as coach to the juniors (under 19).'' For the first time the club will be entering a team in the Pee Wee Division (five to eight years), to be coached by Campbell, and Trott admits the intention is to return to the days when their youth programme was flourishing.
"We would like to get back to that scenario, especially with the three year (transfer) ruling coming in with the BFA,'' he admits. "We want to make sure our programme is running properly.'' Steve DeSilva will coach the Mini Minors `A', Manders the Mini Minors `B', Troy Lewis the Minors and Christopher the Bantams.
And with the likes of Boyles, Christopher, Campbell, Paul Cann and programme co-ordinator Troy Harvey holding college degrees, the club intends to take the lead in another area.
"We want to set up an after school programme, assisting players on the academic side,'' Trott revealed.
"We've been fortunate, we've had a number of prominent sponsors involved in our programme, like Ray Brothers, John Barritt through Mott's juices, Point Mart, Bank of Bermuda, J.Trott Painting, Gosling's, plus one or two sponsors who prefer to remain anonymous.'' Dandy Town will hold a meeting this evening at 7.30 sharp in the Berkeley Institute lecture theatre for all current youth players and any interested youngsters and their parents or guardians, to discuss the club's goals and objectives for their youth programme.
