Unruly fans force abandonment

resulted in yesterday's match between Devonshire Cougars and Social Club at Devonshire Rec. field to be abandoned with 11 minutes remaining.

Referee Dennis Wainwright did not hesitate to call the game after a number of objects were hurled onto the pitch from spectators positioned at the western end following a disallowed goal for the home side.

A bottle landed within 10 feet of Wainwright, who did not comment in detail after the match, but did confirm that his decision was based on "bottles and other things'' entering the field of play.

Ironically, the scene had begun as one of celebration of what onlookers believed was a tying score by Cougars forward Devon Brangman. Several fans ran on the field and threw rolls of toilet paper in jubilation, but their joy quickly turned to anger on realising that there was no goal.

Hostilities continued as Wainwright and his officiating crew made their way off the field with some Cougars players clamouring around the referee pleading for an explanation and others voicing their displeasure to a group of spectators behind the goal. Coach Arnold West eventually went over to the area and had words with some of those gathered there.

This incident follows on the heels of a similar one at Wellington Oval where an angry spectator attacked linesman Gladwin Lodge during a match between St.

George's and Hamilton Parish, hitting Lodge in the face with a bottle.

In that instance St. George's acted swiftly, suspending the offender from the grounds for 10 years, and he is still to be dealt with by the Bermuda Football Association.

At the time of the abandonment Social Club led 2-1 and were seemingly in control of the match although under the conditions Cougars were never out of it.

Troy Darrell opened the scoring in the 35th minute for the Bluebirds when a blunder by Cougars' goalkeeper Fred Richardson gave the ball to Anthony Fubler, who knocked the ball into the penalty area for an onrushing Darrell to tap into an empty net.

Equalising six minutes following the restart was Brangman as he got on the end of a Dale Russell cross from the left.

However, Troy Saunders restored the one-goal lead for Social Club as he volleyed home a George Liburd cross.

Then came the incident that brought a sorrowful end to what was already a dreary match.

This was one of several matches that were abandoned although the others came to more peaceful endings, the only violence being that wrought by Mother Nature in the form of torrential showers and strong winds.

PHC and Somerset's match at PHC Stadium was postponed twice -- Saturday night and yesterday -- without a ball being kicked. Others, which started but did not finish, included St. George's against St. David's (0-0, abandoned after 20 minutes), Hamilton Parish versus Boulevard (0-0, abandoned after 24 minutes) and North Village at Hotels (2-1, abandoned after 85 minutes).

As a result there will be matches every night this week except tonight.

Tomorrow, Parish and Boulevard play at PHC (8 p.m.). The Friendship Trophy and Second Division Shield fixtures scheduled for tomorrow at Devonshire Rec.

(Boulevard v Dandy Town and Wolves v Southampton) have been rescheduled for January 5 at the same venue.

On Wednesday, St. David's face St. George's at Devonshire (8 p.m.), PHC meet Somerset at PHC on Thursday (9 p.m.) and Hotels get a reprieve when they take on North Village again at PHC on Friday (8 p.m.) A Premier Division match between Somerset and Boulevard will be held at PHC on Thursday (7 p.m.).

Gary Darrell's awaited meeting with the Bermuda Football Association's Coaching Committee never materialised on Saturday.

The national coach confirmed yesterday that it has been rescheduled for Monday, December 21 when the World Cup campaign will be reviewed.
