Wade makes all the right moves by Lawrence Trott

Captain Clevie Wade led by example with his best all-round performance of the season, but at times he must have feared becoming the first captain to lose to the visitors.

After restricting the President's XI to 189 on Saturday at St. David's, the Indians looked determined to end their four-game losing streak as they began their run chase with an opening stand of 59 in 14 overs between left-hander Abrar Ahmed and Timothy Kumar.

Wade, himself, was responsible for the breakthrough when he bowled Kumar for 18 in his second over after coming on as second change, with the Indian openers having seen off the pace of Anthony Braithwaite and Chris Caisey.

A couple of water breaks after that proved decisive when, upon the first resumption, number three bat Vinay Kumar was run out for three after playing the ball to cover point and trying for a second run on a misfield by Del Hollis.

However, Dexter Smith was quick to pounce on the loose ball and beat Kumar with his throw to wicket-keeper Jeff Richardson before Kumar could complete the second run.

Wade held a good return catch in that same over to remove the threatening Ahmed for 27 well-played runs to make the score 70 for three.

Arnold Manders was introduced into the attack in the 23rd over and it proved to be a good move by the skipper as, in his second over, two more wickets fell to put the tourists in deep trouble.

First, Manders bowled Surinder Khanna and then captain Vikram Man Singh was run out after playing a ball to Scott Tucker at deep mid-on and being sent back by his partner Kiran Kumar only to be beaten by the throw.

At 87 for five the Blues, after 25 overs, badly needed a good stand to keep them on course for their first victory in Bermuda. It came when Kumar and Naresh Sharma added 37 valuable runs for the sixth wicket as the 100 came up with a six by Sharma over mid-wicket off Manders.

He and Kumar looked determined to take this match down to the wire as they pushed the score along to 124 by the 34th over, leaving them to score 66 in the last 16 overs. The asking rate was 4.12 per over.

But disaster was to strike again when immediately after another water break, Kumar was caught by Wade off Manders for 30. Hyderabad were never in the game after that as Del Hollis, at the other end, helped himself to two wickets and Manders another as the score quickly slumped to 125 for nine.

A last wicket stand of 23 prolonged the inevitable as Wade finished with three for 30, Manders three for 22 and Hollis two for nine.

Braithwaite left the match early and never returned to complete his final four overs, his place on the field being taken by eight-year-old St. David's youngster Fiqre Crockwell who filled in as substitute fielder.

Three other St. David's players, Hollis, Scott Tucker and Cameron Fox, were all called on to play because of the unavailability of Allen Richardson, Allan Douglas and Bruce Perinchief from the original team.

Earlier in the day Andre Manders, opening the batting with Dexter Smith, was high man for the President's XI with 55, scored in 117 minutes from four fours and a six.

Wade, batting at number five, was next high man with 45 as he and Manders took the score from 90 for three in the 25th over to 148 by the 39th when the former fell to the spin of Sridhar.

Wickets fell regularly after that, with the final six going down in the last seven overs as the score went from 162 for five in the 44th to 189 all out on the final delivery of the innings.

Rohit Mohendra, wicket-less in his first six-over spell, claimed three wickets in seven balls in his second spell to finish with three for 41 from 10 overs.

Opening partner, Sharma, too two for 31 from six overs and Sridhar two for 24 off 10 overs.

CLEVIE WADE -- Led by example with his best all-round performance of the season, determined not to be the first captain to lose to Blues.
