Way, Bradshaw set stage for exciting day of finals

for what is expected to be a highly entertaining men's final when the All Bermuda Tennis Club's Open International Tournament winds to a close at the Tennis Stadium today.

Bradshaw, seeded second in the men's singles, was down 3-0 in the second set after taking the first 6-4, before roaring back to take six of the next seven games for game, set and match.

"He really served well and never gave me anything to hit,'' said Way after coming off the court.

"He is a smart player and was on his game. He followed up his serve by coming to the net and his low returns had a lot of slice which effectively kept me out of the match.'' Meanwhile, Brian's brother and men's top seed, Michael, had little difficulty in disposing of the unseeded Tony Readwin, also in straight sets, by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

In the women's doubles a tired but victorious Laverne Jones lamented: "I choked!'', seconds after she and Shelly Eve completed a 6-0, 7-5 straight sets upset over second seeds Ailsa Campbell and Jacqui White in their semifinal clash.

"I could do no wrong on my serve, even hitting aces, until I was serving for the match at 5-4,'' remembered Jones.

"Then I lost my nerve,'' she explained, "so I choked.'' However, victory was secured when her partner lost only one point when serving for the match at 6-5. Jones and Eve will now meet top seeds Sheila Gomez and Wendy Gelhay in today's final.

A total of 10 finals will be played starting with the senior women's doubles at 9.00 between Wendy Salvia and Denise Kyme and Juanita Allchin and Sheila Gomez.

The women's and men's singles finals, which will see Donna Bradshaw facing Jacqui White and Michael Way taking on Jerome Bradshaw, start at noon and 1.45.

In late matches last night Mike Curry and Donna Bradshaw defeated Steve Bean and Laverne Jones 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the mixed doubles while the men's doubles saw Tony Readwin and Keith Beattie defeat Jerome Bradshaw and Alec Anderson 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). The men's doubles final has been moved from 10.30 to 2p.m.
