League Cup when they beat holders Sandys Sports Club by 14 runs at Shelly Bay.

The victory was sweet revenge for WIA who lost to Sandys in last year's final.

Out of the running, Sandys skipper Terry Corday immediately conceded next Sunday's game to Devonshire Stars' skipper Gary Ascento -- a match that would have been of academic interest only with WIA through to the final with two Group A victories under their belts.

WIA beat Stars by six wickets in their first match and now await the outcome of next Sunday's Group B match between Forties and St. David's, who have each won their opening match, to see who their opponents will be in the final on August 28.

WIA's 37-over total of 188 on Sunday was built around useful contributions from opener Andy Boyce, whose 47 included seven fours, Winston Vaughn (39) and Randy Liverpool (32). Liverpool and Jerry Callender (16 not out) added a crucial 35 runs for the last wicket.

Opener Ray DeSilva followed up his two for 16 by making a patient 87 (six fours) in Sandys' reply of 174 but the west enders fell behind the clock and lost their last six wickets for 33 in a desperate late run chase in a do-or-die attempt to stay in the competition.

Their cause was not helped when their number five batsman, Sanjika Samaranayake, had to retire on 19 to go to work.

Forties ended North Village's slim hopes by beating them by 52 runs at Southampton Oval to avenge a defeat at the same stage of last year's tournament. St. David's beat North Village by 97 runs in their first match.

Despite playing one short, Forties piled up 206 for eight at the Oval with Gary Edwards following up his league century against Village with an innings of 51 containing four fours.

Edwards, who shared an opening stand of 45 with Oliver Franks (15), was fifth out at 129 in the 27th over but the tail wagged and Ivan Clifford, with a six and four fours in an unbeaten 49, kept the momentum going.

Mike Levon was the pick of the Village attack -- handicapped by the absence of Elliott Jennings and Derek Bell -- with three for 18.

Levon and Gerald Bean, who earlier took two for 21, got Village off to a flying start, bringing up the 50 in only 30 minutes but hobbling skipper Gordon Campbell, injured in a motorcycle accident the day before, swung the game Forties' way.

Off a short run because of a badly bruised hip and road rash, Campbell ended the opening stand at 54 by taking a return catch from Levon (21) and then had Bean caught behind for 28, although the batsman said later the rising ball had clipped his helmet.

Campbell took another good return catch to dismiss Mike Young and then caught Dion Ball at cover off the persevering Paul Field (two for 19).

Edwards chipped in with two for eight as Village tried to keep up with the clock and Campbell got in on the act again when he ran out 14-year-old Duanne Lowe with a soccer-style kick.

Skipper Wendell Lindsay battled to keep his side in the hunt but Harold Minors took off the wicketkeeping gloves to end Village's resistance at 154 by bowling Lindsay for a fighting 36 in the 37th over.
