Wind, rain and cold temperatures did not dampen the enthusiasm of the ponies and drivers at Vesey Street on Sunday, nor the racing fans who braved the
Young Nicholas DeCosta had a great day for his first time on the track, winning both his heats with his new pony T.W. Second Try. He beat the trotter J.B.'s Easter Prize and the young Bermuda bred pony Just a Gigolo who ran his fastest race since he started a couple of months ago.
The veteran trotter, Meadow Rose, driven by Francis DeSilva showed that her racing career is not over yet. They won both their heats against very strong competition from Charles Whited with Spencer's Taylor Maid and new pony/driver combination of Sandtrap and John Flood.
Spencer's Taylor Maid came in second in the first heat, with Sandtrap third and new driver/pony combination of Murray Terceira and Bermuda Warrior feeling out the track and coming in fourth. The second heat had Sandtrap placing second and Spencer third, but Sandtrap was set back a position for galloping.
Whited's new pony Ralph-L-Time made quite a debut on Sunday, winning both his races in times faster than the time bar allowed, thereby putting him two legs out and into a faster bar next race day. Another pony to come out of that bar in Ponder Babe and Pleasant Surprise with Worrell Bean have one leg out.
Ponder Babe got second spot in the first heat with Pleasant Surprise third and Starfire Abbe fourth. In the second heat Pleasant Surprise came second, Ponder Base third and Starfire Abbe fourth.
The 1:16-1:18/4 bar saw Tina's Princess with Anthony Rego continue on his winning streak, beating Misty's Little Dream and Penny's Rocky Road in both heats. Tina's Princess will be competing in the third year old stakes races on Boxing Day.
Controversy surrounded the first heat of the 1:13-1:15/4 `B' Division race.
The starter flagged the race as a go, but Fernando Rego with J.B.'s T.W. Bell and Annie Sousa with Little Dinger, thought it was a no start and pulled up.
Eddie Roque, with V Six, kept going so Little Dinger started up again and, although some 20 yards behind managed to overtake at the paddock corner and beat V Six. Rego pulled out of the race. The second heat saw an easy win for Little Dinger over V Six. T.W. Bell did not race the second heat.
Eddie The Great showed that he was not the best two and three year old Pony in the States in 1991 and 1992 for nothing. Driven by Michael DeCosta and starting in fourth hole in the first heat, he easily beat out Sandacre Tashiba, Hoe Down Don and Mowtown Scott in the `A' Division of the 1:13-1:15/4 bar.
Eddie The Great is one of the hot favourites to win the three year old stakes race on Boxing Day. In the second heat he was driven by Keith Woodley and nothing could touch him off the rail.
Nateway is obviously back on form. The last few races have seen disappointing results for Michael DeCosta and Nateway but on Sunday he proved that he is the best in Bermuda, winning both heats and in the second heat on two-fifths of a second off the track record on a very wet, soggy track.
The general consensus is that Nateway is going to smash his track record on Boxing Day. Grand Magic with Charles Whited came in with two seconds and Tom Matthews with Catch A Fire two disappointing thirds. Catch A Fire is another hot favourite for the three-year-old stakes on Boxing Day.
