League is on right track, says Bascome
Island Soccer League (ISL) commissioner David Bascome has reflected on a memorable second season which he is adamant easily surpassed the inaugural campaign.
It saw the first ever local match screened on international television with Fox Soccer Channel shooting the All-Star game, and in terms of drawing in crowds and attracting a hardcore fanbase, the ex-Bermuda international said he was left thrilled.
But Bascome is not a man to rest on his laurels and is already setting new objectives to help take the six-a-side league to the next level. With a few more pieces added to the puzzle, the league's potential is endless in Bascome's eyes.
"I thought the season went really well with the support from the fans, coaches, players, sponsors, media and all the volunteers," Bascome told The Royal Gazette.
"I would like to say thank you for helping us complete another successful season. They all helped us prepare for one of the biggest days in local sports and that was the All-Star game on Fox Soccer Channel.
"Last season saw a great deal of change, from being on Fox to the addition of cheerleaders. We're definitely moving in the right direction. Our main focus this year was to make sure the game did not get lost with all the other entertainment that was going on.
"We wanted to get across to the public that the matches were not only for football fans, but also for families too."
A new development programme is to be launched next summer for players aged between 15-18, with college scouts coming to the Island to potentially give those who impress a chance on the bigger stage.
"Next season we're looking to add a players development programme which would see players from 15 to 18 take part in a tournament." he added. "These teams would be youth teams to the ISL teams.
"We would be highlighting the younger players and have college coaches coming to Bermuda to scout them.
"Also, expect to see us back on Fox Soccer with a major celebrity coming to Bermuda to be apart of the All-Star weekend.
"Last season we wanted to make some changes that were going to help us create our own identity. We changed the jerseys from the previous year and went with a custom designed jersey, which will be the same next year and will not change until 2010."
