Bain and O'Connell won the match 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 but the unseeded pair of Furbert and Brown made the top seeds in Group B fight for every point.

"But that's is as it should be,'' said the power-serving Bain. "As you can tell it was a see-saw match all the way but we were never in fear of losing.'' However, all was not lost for Furbert as he returned to the court to defeat Richard Knight 6-0, 6-2 in the men's singles in Group B.

Pulling off the major upset of the day were the unseeded pair of Mark Ray and David Marshall as they ousted the second-seeded pair of Alan Simmons and Bill Nearon 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the men's seniors.

Meanwhile, Laverne Jones and Steve Bean continued their winning ways in the mixed doubles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mark Melvin and Ailsa Campbell.

Winfred Gonsalves, the `dark horse' of the men's A section, continued to move quietly towards the final with a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 victory over Mark Ward.
