Parish have new and improved look
of regular players are some of the reasons why Hamilton Parish can be expected to be produce a new style of play this season.
Forced to move players he does have at his disposal into new positions to fill gaps as the 1992-93 season kicks off, coach Johnny Nusum believes that the intended changes could be put to their advantage.
Parish are coming off a remarkable season where they reached the Dudley Eve Trophy before losing to eventual runners-up Somerset and the FA Cup semifinals where they lost to champions PHC. Their league performances slipped in the second half but though they finished eighth, Parish were hardly in danger of relegation.
"Overall we will be fielding an entirely different team, one with possibly a slightly different style. But I am hoping that the changes will make the squad stronger when those unable to start off the season are able to join us,'' said Nusum.
Nusum is satisfied with the accomplishments of the squad last season, which saw the team return to the First Division for the first time since the early '80s and now he hopes they are able to build on the experience they picked up even though the veteran Hill, who never settled into the line-up for various reasons, has returned to Hotels.
The coach tackles his second straight season in the First Division with the nucleus of last year's team and the addition of Kacy Simons from North Village and goalkeeper Detroy Smith who joins them from St. George's.
"With the changes we have planned our midfield should be much stronger this season, especially with Kacy in the middle. I hope to incorporate the midfielders more in our attacks, last season they were often bypassed with the defenders distributing balls directly to the front-runners,'' said Nusum.
"We have had a good pre-season so far. We recognise the fact that we do not have the greatest and most skillful players who can carry a team, so we are putting emphasis on team work. All of the players are being made aware of the fact that they have a role to do.'' With Smith and last season's goalkeeper George Fox looking secure in their positions, Nusum is concentrating on strengthening the defence, which will definitely be sporting a new look.
Chris Caisey, who was outstanding last season, will be one familiar face returning but also challenging for one of the four places in the back of the defence are Ian Frith who joins them from Wolves, John Nicholl who is a Scottish player just joining, Franklyn Simons and Dennis Trott.
"There is no doubt that there will be quite a few changes in the back of the defence starting off the season,'' said Nusum.
In addition to newcomer Simons in the middle, Nusum is banking on another good season from workhorse Walton Burgess, Zane Stowe, Albert Wolfe and Joe Lathan who will probably be involved in the attack as well.
Irving Burgess returns as captain and will once again spearhead the attack with Sinclair Gibbons moving up from left-back to left wing and Lathan and Wolfe among those capable of filling the gaps that may occur up front.
Nusum admits that the absence of a player with calibre of Ricky Hill means that he will have to come up with a suitable replacement.
"Without Ricky it means we have to work hard on that central striker's spot.
It is difficult to say how his departure will affect us,'' he said. "With him we had to play a certain way and now that he is not around we are just going to have to adjust.'' 1991-92 accomplishments: League: Eighth; Dudley Eve Trophy -- lost to Somerset Trojans 3-1; FA Cup -- lost to PHC 3-1 in the semifinals.
Notable Player transfers: In -- Kacy Simons Out -- Ricky Hill.
CHRIS CAISEY -- One of Parish's top performers last season.
