Russell and Simons set for shoot-out
The Island Soccer League's (ISL) top two goal scorers will go head-to-head in the competition's final at the National Sports Centre (NSC) tonight.
The Storm led by goal machine Antoine Russell, who is the league's leading goalscorer, will lock horns with the Union and Rohaan Simons, who is close behind in the scoring charts.
With the Union having the best record of the regular season and the Storm winning their division, no one was surprised when the two swept aside all competitors to book their places in the final.
The Union defeated Apex 4-2 in their semi-final fixture last week with two goals from Simons, while the Storm needed all four of All-Star MVP Russell's goals to get past the Royal.
In the two matches, the Storm had the more demanding match, being pushed to the limit throughout their game and needing overtime to dispose of their opponents.
Storm coach Andrew Bascome said that although his side weren't used to the intensity shown by the Royal, they showed the character of champions to advance.
"Our semi-final match against the Royal was a very good game, played with a lot of intensity," said Bascome.
"I was just a little concerned with the tackles that were coming in, but other then that it was a very close affair.
"It was nice to win, but we also have to prepare for another potentially heated battle in the final as no one wants to come this close to a championship and lose."
Bascome knows that his side must stick to their game plan in order to lift the ISL trophy tonight.
With speed to burn up front in Simons, Bascome said that marking the goal poacher will be a tough task and could lead to his side creating even more chances.
"I managed to get a look at our opposition in the semi-final match and they have some pretty useful players on their side," he said.
"It is just a matter of us going out and getting the result, no matter how it comes.
"It is important that we deny Rohaan space and time on the ball as he has the pace and ability to hurt us.
"He is very flexible in his scoring methods, so we address him as well as a few other players of interest.
"And if we can catch them on the counter-attack with Antoine (Russell) and Angelo (Simmons), we will be ok.
"We will have to stick to our plans and understand that the other side want to win as well. The physicality of the match maybe a bit different but we have to allow the referee to make the calls.
"Whenever there is a foul, there's a potential for goals as the field is so small. The cooler heads will prevail because this game is about character.
"This is what being a champion is about, being able to handle what the opposition throw at you.
"When they are fouling you, I personally took it as a compliment based on the fact that they have to stop you from doing something special.
"But the game will be exciting and I want all the spectators to be ready for a great match."
The champions will be awarded their trophy after the final. Kick off is at 8 p.m.
