Storm are crowned ISL Champions
Storm skipper Ajani Gibbons led by example as his team defeated the Union 5-4 in a thrilling final at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
Gibbons scored 13 seconds into the first over-time period to guide his side to their first Island Soccer League (ISL) championship, and his second, on Tuesday night.
The victorious captain, along with striker Angelo Simmons, are the first two players to win consecutive titles after being part of the Kings side who won last year.
An own goal at the end of the game gave the Union a fighting chance of snatching victory as the match went to over-time.
The game started brightly as red-hot striker Rohaan Simons, gave the Union the lead from the penalty spot in the first minute.
A handball by Milton Jones in the box resulted in Simons blasting his spot kick past Union's goalkeeper Jay Smith.
Not to be left out of the spectacle, the league's leading goal scorer, Antoine Russell, equalised for the Storm late in the first quarter.
Simons then swung the match back in the Union's favour after being left unmarked at the back post to slide his shot into the net. And minutes later it was Simons again making it 3-1, completing a first-half hat-trick.
Sean Simmons bought the Storm back within one on the stroke of half-time with a thunderbolt that Union 'keeper Jason Smith had no chance of saving.
Heading into the third quarter and with the words of their coach still ringing in their ears, the Storm found an equaliser through Keith Jennings to knot the game up at 3-3.
Otis Minors gave the Storm the 4-3 lead after he scored from a shoot out.
With only a few minutes remaining in regulation time, a shot from Otis Steede drew the Union level.
Milton Jones then turned a low shot from Steede into his own goal. Steede was credited with the strike.
With the stage set for a hero to emerge, up stepped Gibbons to stamp his authority on the match send his side into sheer joy.
A kick in by Jennings found Gibbons who let fly with a long-range right footed shot, which flew past a diving Smith.
"This victory feels great. We knew we could do it as long as we went out and played our style of football," said a delighted Gibbons.
"We lost Angelo (Simmons) before the game so I had a new role. It feels good to have two rings right now, along with Angelo. I stepped up in the time and delivered the goods for my team.
"Being down 3-1, there was no pressure really on us, we know we can come from behind.
"We have been down before in the season so there was no reason why we couldn't do it again. We dug deep tonight and in the end it all worked out for us.
"Our motto is train as a team, talk as a team and play as a team. That's what our coach Andrew Bascome has shown us throughout this season.
Simmons, who was unavailable for the match, also picked up his second ring and gave his skipper plenty of credit for stepping up in the crucial stages of the season.
"It's a good thing he scored the winner and he's a player who works hard and does what is best for the team," said Simmons.
"I was unable to play tonight but I had faith in my team and my skipper deserves all the credit everyone will give him.
"We are the only two players right now with two rings, so that is something I can joke with the boys about.
"But in the end I am glad for the side and our fans who support us so we will celebrate this for a while."
