U-13s shine at Caribbean tennis event

Bermuda remain on course to defend their International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-13 Caribbean title with all four players in strong positions ahead of the top-tier knockout stage.

On the opening day of the championships on Monday, Chris Rego beat Jermaine Legrand of Aruba 4-0, 4-1, while James Finnigan posted victories over Edan Martes of the Netherlands and Antilles 4-1, 4-0 and Arubian Kyle Frankie 4-0, 4-0.

In the girls' matches, Eva Frazzoni took on a tough and determined Shaeda Nickle of Jamaica, winning 4-1, 5-4 (7-3). Frazzoni automatically qualified for the main draw after one of her opponents was forced out of the tournament.

Taylor McHarg then lost her first match of the day to Jamaican Cherise Slocombe 4-1,4-1, before bouncing back with a tie-break victory over Daynisja Ricardo of the Netherland Antilles.

McHarg won the first set 4-2, lost the second 5-4 before winning a thrilling 10-point match tiebreak, 10-6.

Yesterday's play saw the remaining singles round-robin matches followed by the opening round of the knockout doubles matches.
