Rams too strong for Lady Bluebirds
North Village Lady Rams celebrated a milestone at Bernard Park at the weekend.
Lady Rams won the Mix Up Switch Up Netball Tournament after edging Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds 9-7 in the final.
The champions-elect advanced to the final after going unbeaten in group play with an unblemished 4-0 record.
The achievement marked the first time Lady Rams have won this event involving teams comprised of men and women.
Lady Rams coach Jeanann Hardtman attributed her team’s success to team harmony on court.
“It was definitely a team effort and everyone pulled together,” she said. “I saw swift movement of the ball from both the men and women.”
Hardtman said the strategy to use the men in defence and leave the shooting to the women worked to perfection.
And even though Lady Rams were not favoured to win she said her players went into the tournament bristling with confidence.
“They went in there expecting to win even though they weren’t the favourites to win,” she said. “They went expecting to win, played their hardest and they did win.
“Everyone was excited to play and wanted to go out there and win.”
Lady Rams progressed to the final after getting past Group B rivals Data Tech Netts, Young Men’s Social Club Blazing Bluebirds, Devonshire Colts Warriors and defending Mix Up Switch Up champions New Life.
Lady Bluebirds, who are in contention for Senior Winter League honours this season, also went unbeaten en route to the final.
The Angle Street club sealed their place in the final after prevailing against North Village Lady Rams Too, Smooth and Easy Tigers and Signworx Netts.
Lady Bluebirds’s path to the final was shorter than that of Lady Rams as they won their Group A match with Warwick Pink Panthers by default.
