Young Zebras handed funds for studying

Thanks to generous donations from the private and corporate sectors eight young people heavily involved with Pembroke Hamilton Club’s (PHC) various sports and community programmes can now pursue higher education.During its fifth annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, local charity The PHC Foundation awarded $35,800 to this year’s scholarship recipients that included professional football hopefull Tre Ming.The scholarship awards will assist the recipients in pursuing their studies at Bermuda College, Prep School and University. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on their scholastic ability, dedication to achievement, character, leadership and community involvement.Shakeem Albouy was awarded $10,000 to further his education at Old Dominion University while Kali Lespere (Episcopal High School), Ra-Che Williams (Harefield Academy), De’Aun Lodge (Royal Alexander and Albert Prep School), Aden Peets (University of Salford), Sudan Furbert (South Gloucester and Stroud College) and Ming (Elmira College) each received $4,000 to go towards enhancing their own education abroad. Zoe Smith was awarded $1,800 to further her education at Bermuda College.Albouy received the lion’s share of scholarship funding because of his exceptional scholastic ability, commitment to his career goal, mature demeanour, leadership and community involvement.The PHC footballer will receive $5,000 this year and the remaining balance of his scholarship award next year that is to go towards Pre Med studies at Old Dominion University. Albouy previously attended Darlington Prep School in Rome, Georgia.This year’s PHC Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony was held at XL’s O’Hara House and attended by Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney who praised this year’s scholarship recipients.“Bermuda will be very will served in the future in regards to lawyers, politicians, sports enthusiasts, and social services,” the Minister said.Guest speaker for the ceremony was former PHC Zebras and Bermuda skipper Omar Shakir who encouraged this year’s scholarship recipients and stressed the importance of interaction and engagement in order to be successful in one’s chosen field.The PHC Foundation has formally existed since 2006.“The PHC Foundation relies on both individual and corporate donations in order to pursue its mission,” said committee member and Zebras defender Jonathan Ball.“The PHC Foundation has awarded over $110,000 over the last four years and we would like to send a special thank you to all of the 2012 donors.”
