Red-hot Sousa among favourites for Series Stakes

Lindsay Sousa at the helm of Mr Indiana

Lindsay Sousa will be among the pre-race favourites at Sunday’s opening heats of the Best of Three Series Stakes at Vesey Street and for good reason. The female harness driver is fresh off a superb weekend of racing which saw her capture four wins on three different ponies all owned by Sims Field Stables.Sousa was a double heat winner in the 1:06/1-1:07/1 time bar with Mr Indiana and won two additional heats in the 1:08/3-1:10/3 and 1:05-1:06 time bars with Imagine That and Real Lady Like to emerge as the top driver on the day.“I am very pleased with the results of all three ponies,” Sousa said. “It was my first time racing Imagine That so it is a process to get used to as each pony runs different.“All the horses are running great. The trotter, Mr Indiana, is running excellent every weekend.”Sousa attributes her recent success to a number of key factors, such as preparation and diet.“Without a weekly training schedule the ponies would not run very well in their heats,” she said. “They are no different from how we humans would train for a race and the right diet is also key.”Sousa hopes she can continue her hot streak heading into this weekend’s Best of Three Series Stakes, where she has entered Imagine That in the three-year-old division and Real Lady Like in the four/five-year old division.“I will try my best to continue racing well,” Sousa said. “Real Lady Like is getting better and better each week she races. I hope they all do well.”The Best of Three Series Stakes will feature six heats with the top four in the points standings after the first six heats going forward to a seventh and eighth heat championship race.Points will be awarded in each heat; one point for first, two for second, three for third and four for fourth. Non-starters will receive six points. The winner of the series will be the pony with the least amount of points after the final two heats.Event sponsors Keen Limited and Correia Construction have pledged an undisclosed sum of money which will be added to the total purse for each race series they sponsor. The entry fee of $75 will complete the purse for the four ponies that qualify for the championship race.First place ponies will be paid 45 percent of the purse, second will receive 25 percent, third 20 percent and fourth 10 percent. The draw for post positions will be made on each race day of the best of three-series during the drivers’ meeting.Racing begins at 12 noon.
