Correia escapes serious injury after harness race tragedy

Veteran harness driver Philip Correia escaped serious injury after being run over in an accident that claimed the life of a racing pony during the last round of the Bermuda CableVision Friday Night Series at Vesey Street. The tragic accident occurred in heat 13 in the slower 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bar when the pony (Imagine That) Correia was racing went down while leading the field resulting in a three-horse pile up.Shadow Play, driven by teenager Tyler Lopes, died from injuries the colt suffered in the race also involving rookie Kiwon Waldron (Mercedes Spence).“I was the pony in front that went down first and I got beat up pretty bad because two horses ran me over,” Correia told The Royal Gazette. “The other horses were behind me as I came to a reaching halt and just piled up on me.“He (Imagine that) was probably doing the best he’s ever done and randomly spilled out. There were no signs; he was running as normal and a piece of harness broke and instantly we were on the ground.”Correia injured his foot in the accident while youngsters Lopes and Waldron were unscathed.“I injured my foot and ended up going to hospital,” he said. “But fortunately it was not broken so I left.”He added: “It was very unfortunate and I think it was a one-off accident. It was a very freak accident and something that doesn’t normally occur by any means down here. I believe this is the first time something like this has ever happened here.”Shadow Play died instantly in the accident that forced remaining heats to be cancelled.“He just snapped his neck one time and stayed where he landed,” said the horse’s owner Robert Lopes. “The pony in front (Imagine That) went down while Tyler was pulling out to go around him and the front legs clipped the back of the wheel and when he went down he went on his head.”Lopes said the loss of his only racing pony was devastating, especially for his son who put much time in with the young colt.“My son was with him every day, it was his best friend,” he said. “It’s a great loss and like losing a member of the family.”Correia added: “No matter how you look at it, it’s a bad situation and it’s unfortunate because Tyler’s horse was young and showing signs of improvement.”Shadow Play’s half sister, Bye Bye Byrd, died in a blaze that claimed the lives of two other horses at Graceland Stables earlier this year.Driving Horse and Pony Club launched the Bermuda CableVision Friday Night Series earlier this year. The series sees the three fastest drivers on average time in each time bar receive cash earnings at the end of racing.
